Hi,
Hi all, I own a Mazerati and LOVE it.. It has truley brought joy to rehearsal again. But I am a horrible gear pig and am always trying out new stuff. Before I bought the Mazerati (my first Z amp) I was considering the Z28, but ultimately chose the Mazerati.
That said I never got a chance to try-out the Z-28 and I am curious about headroom. Do most of you play clean, slightly hairy or full blown overdriven? And if clean is that in a band setting? I will never sell my Mazerati, but may add a Z28 just to mix it up.
And why does everyone say that the Gia and a Z28 is such a great set-up. Use the Gia for overdriven sounds and the z28 for clean? Thanks!

There's plenty of headroom depending on how you set the EQ. unlike the Maz (I had one, it's a great amp) the dual eq controls effect how much and how soon that section of frequency overdrives.
I can get plenty of cleans with a touch of hair using buckers, or crystal to niece and hairy with my Tele. Airbrake so my drummer will quit whining!

I gotta agree with big mike, Just replace the word "tele" with the word "strat" and you've got my thoughts exactly.

So far (it's still honeymoon time) I'm managing "hairy clean" with my humbucker-equipped 335-style guitar, which is what I'm purposely dialing in. I've only had one bona fide band situation with this particluar amp & speaker (Z28 head, Z 2x10 cab), and that was outdoors so I don't think I've had enough experience in that arena yet. I'm reasonably confident that I can get all the cleans I want at levels that I'd need them at.
I should add (admit?) that I've somewhat reassessed my approach to this guitar because of the way the amp/guitar pair relate to each other. It's very responsive, and I really like it. It's been so enthralling, I've barely played any other guitars!

Big Mike, when you say plenty of cleans, is that comparing to the Mazerati? I generally keep my rati running just slightly hairy - vol. around 11, and tone around 2:30. I'm pretty loud by that point (need to be with my drummer and the other guitar player wailing away) - could the Z28 keep up at that volume?

As an owner of both - I can say yes, the Z-28 can keep up in your situation.
The tone controls really let you dial in not only the tone, but the growl as well.
hope this helps.

I have a pretty loud drummer, and my 1x12 Z-28 keeps up with him really well. It's probably the perfect amp for me in this situation, with volume @ 2PM, bass @ 1 or 2PM, and treble @ 2:30PM. That gives me just enough of everything I need for leads, but not so much over the top that I can't dial the guitar back for some funky clean tones.
Like baby bear's porridge....it's "just right".
