So in the last couple of weeks I've played a few nice amps. One is the new Marshall hand wired 18 watt and the other being a RX ES. The Marshall had a great drive/distortion tone with the amp dimed and the RX ES sounded great too. But the Marshall wasn't loud enough and the RX ES is really loud. I don't know that I need the volume of the RX ES but I loved the sound. How does the Ghia compare with these 2 amps? Is it louder than the Marshall, can it get as distorted as the RX ES? The CG is a hard amp to find and I'm willing to bet I'll order one without playing it so I need some opinions. I'm looking for a cool rock and roll amp and I'm definitely gonna get another Z. I currently own a Z-28 and Maz 38 SR. I just need some help from my fellow Z addicts.

The Ghia is louder than the Marshall but the tone is different. The Ghia has more of a Blues-Rock sound to it & the Marshall has that British drive sound. If you're looking for an amp that will do that British drive sound in a Z I recommend the 6545. VERY British in tone but has the 45 side. That will give you lots of tone options between the two.

Thanks prowler, I thought the Ghia might be louder. I've got the British sound in a few other amps I own. I guess I'm looking for an amp with the growl of the RX ES but a little louder than the Marshall. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree here. Maybe I sould be looking at the RX ES with an Air Brake and/or some inefficient speakers. I've thought about the 6545 by the way but it would have to beable to replace my Shiva and that would be very hard to do. Thanks for the response. Jason

I've played thru those new Marshall 18 heads, cabs and combos at GC and I think the Ghia is just hands down better for less than half the geetas. The little Marshalls just don't sound like 2 Grand's worth to me. I have an 80's Marshall Studio 15 that is at least as good, maybe not as cool lookin' and I bought it for 125 bucks out of the Austin Chronicle classifieds prolly 10 years ago.. I remember when those little 20 watt heads were everywhere for 300 bucks. My buddies Martin and Steve Daly @ Kiss My Amp sold a ton of 'em.

Yeah, I'd have a hard time paying that much for the Marshall. The reason I mentioned it at all was I'm looking for an amp that's a little louder than the Marshall with the tone of the RS EX, although the Marshall had a nice sound. I'm just trying figure out how the Ghia stacks up. Thanks for the response BW!

I think the Maz 18 NR would be a little closer soundwise to the RX ES than the Ghia ( Maz 18 NR can get some pretty good drive going, the Ghia's drive to me is really sweet, can be a little fatter, LESS compressed and smoother/ less "snotty" than the Maz 18 NR) Ghia is pretty sweet, kinda it's own thing... but again, if your going for that RX ES type sound at a lower volume... Maz JR NR is just a little closer to me... JMHO...YMMV... Jason
