try an NOS 5751 in V1. That should give you a little more head room and mello the amp out a bit.

hi hunkowood- cool name i use a 12BH7 in the second tube- v2- which is the phase inverter most of the ghia's gain or drive seems to be from here sama's comment about a 5751, particularly vintage one is correct, but the 12bh7 is also great for when you want more headroom for clean humbuckers or effects try www.kcanostubes.com or www.thetubedepot.com

Hey Buster,
I'll try the 12BH7. in V2. Are you using a matched phase inverter?
Sam

Hi sam my understanding is most of the nos stuff is pretty closely matched i got mine which from memory is anos (almost new old stock) RCA, from www.tubedepot.com i'm not sure it is a better option than your idea which i assume is nos 5751 (maybe the green GE) in both v1 and v2 try both- i think the 12bh7 will give even more head room but i'd be interested if you find it as detailed brett

Hello from Italy,
i am intresting in your discussion because i would like to have more headroom with my Ghia.
I have just a question: Have the 5751 and 12bh7 the same characteristic of the 12ax7 present on the Ghia? Because speaking with a thec person in the shop here, he told me that i cannot mount these tubes in the Ghia instead of the 12ax7 because they are different and i can damage the amplifier. So, i am a liittle bit worried to make this tubes change. Thanks for any suggestion you can give me Robert

The 12BH7 has been recommended or the Ghia by many, same with the 5751. They will not hurt your Ghia. You can also try 12AT7, 12AY7, 12 AU7, 12AX7, 7025, ECC83, ECC803. What else guys?

when you talk about using a 12AT7, 12AY7, 12AU7, 12AX7, 7025, ECC83, ECC803 as possibilities, do you mean for V1 or V2? Myles had mentioned in the past that the 12AT7's plate voltage is much higher than that of a 5751. though i just popped in a new EH 12AT7 in the V1 and got some sweet warm bubbly late night results. though i'll need to open her up in the AM. please clarify, thanks %^)>

fired up my CG loud this afternoon w/ the EH 12AT7 in V1, through a old rat, tremulator and a ibanez delay and it sounded AWESOME! lots of head room and still super sweet creamy tone. sounded more tweedy. really diggin' it. should be great for louder clean headroom/pedalboards/humbuckers. have a great weekend everybody! peace JC %^)>

What a great bunch of replies. How about a cohesive list of what works best in V1,V2.Also what happens if I change the hardness of my power tubes? Thanks,pb

for me it's an ANOS GE 12ax7 in v1 and NOS JAN GE 5751 in v2 for lots of drive and a NOS RCA 12BH7 (all from for more headroom in v2. with softer GT output tubes you get more distortion at lower volume- and since the lack of headroom in a ghia comes from v2 driving the output tubes harder or softer, this most likely won't be what you're after all the best

right now it's a old stock "Fender" 12ax7 (pulled from a '71 DR i used to have. nice, slightly more Fender-Vox chime) in V1, a NOS RCA 12bh7 for cleaner tones, or a NOS GE 5751 for earlier breakup in V2, JJ el84's (that came in the amp) and a NOS Mazda 5y3 in the rec. though i keep a GT 12ax7m (meatier bloom), EH12ax7 (sweet and bold), EH 12at7wc (sweet, clean & warm) and , JJ ecc83s (bolder, Hiwatt-ish) in a padded box in the pocket of a Gator double pedal gig bag so i can change the tonal details on the fly @ the session or gig. who's next? have a great day... peace JC %^)>

I may be stating the obvious, but using a more efficient speaker can increase headroom dramatically. For example, I tried my Ghia with a Weber Blue Dog ceramic & an Emi Tonker. There was allot more headroom and less speaker breakup with the Tonker.

I use my Ghia with a 75 watt Celestion in one cab and a 200 watt EV 12L in another, and the volume for club work is pretty brutal, even with just a 12AX7 in V1 and the 5751 in V2. I realize a lot of guys approach the Ghia and amps like this with low headroom and beautiful speaker breakup in mind, but my thought was to get a big, fat, pristine clean and then use pedals for my growl and grind. Higher powered speakers will definitely offer up some headroom. I can't get past 9:30 or so on most stages with my setup.
