Yeah, this amp LIKES to be turned up LOUD! I went out to the garage and fetched my Hot Plate - the Airbrake couldn't tame her till about half the bedroom level was consumed. The Hot Plate goes to -12db before it gets into the bedroom rheostat. So I set it at -12, put the bass and middle wide open, set the treble at noon, the master at about 11 o'clock, and the volume at noon. Then used the presense for edge. Oh my. Talk about glorious - there are those tones I remember from my youth! Still pretty loud even at -12 db! But not loud enough to get kicked out of here by the wife. I'll probably do a clip or two with this amp, but I really want to get the 6545 tuned up and do a comparison. So it will be a few days I think. AND I want to find some new backing tracks - all of the ones I have here are lame.

OK, this amp likes to be loud. I know I already said that, but the magic starts when the master volume gets to 10 o'clock or higher. I'm finding that it has the sound I want with the MV right at noon. But I don't need the preamp volume that high - just 10 o'clock or so and it's just right. Not real high gain, but it has that springy edgy quality that the early rock stuff had. Presence can be anywhere from 10 o'clock to dimed and I think it sounds great. Depends on the guitar I would say. I've mostly played my PRS Singlecut for now, but I did throw the Mexi-Strat on there and it sounded as expected with that guitar. I switched to the THD 4x12 since I'm not currently hauling that thing to gigs - slid it down all those stairs on its top. But the 4x12 is made for this kind of amp - it just begs to be unleashed. Of course the neighbors would be begging for the police if I did that. Still have to throw the two Groshes on there and see what develops - I think both should sound pretty good, but I'm mostly curious about that Tele. That thing has such a woody, clangy tone that I'm curious how much of that will translate via the SRZ. Liking this amp - I think I'll do a comparison of all these great amps on one clip...

Hey Steve, I'm really digging my PRS through the SRZ-65 too. The PRS just seems to have a certain aggression and growl to it that really shines through with the amp. I took Myles' advice and tried the Volume turned up to around 12-1 and the Gain set around 9 and really like the rhythm tones I'm getting. For leads, a quick tap into Mr. Ed and I'm got some serious lead tones happening.

At gig volume I expect it will be just glorious!

As of late I've been running the master wide open and volume either at or a hair before noon. Punishing (in a good way)! Still messing with the tone control settings.

That sort of nails it when you say "tones I remember from my youth" Then again .... unless you are in your mid to late fifties you missed where it all started Those tones just continued to be the great rock tones of all time.

I was surprised when I showed that trick to Buddy Whittington and Michael Burks on their different amps. It is a cool trick and the SRZ MV is about the best there ever was.

It's a great "trick" that really brings out some great tones in the amp. I tend to think that a power-tube overdrive sounds better than distorting the preamp tubes anyway, as many of the preamp tubes sound brittle to me when you hit them with too much gain. One example is the various distortion pedals out there with a "real" 12AX7 tube in it...blah, what an uninspired tone (not all are bad though).

I was just having this discussion with an idiot on a local forum who doesn't see (or hear) any advantage to using power tube distortion. Man, that guy is seriously tone challenged....

Just tell him preamp distortion is not touch sensitive and output distortion is. That is why SRV used 5751s rather than 12AX7s in the front end of his BF Fenders ... to drop the gain in the front end even more in a front end that is not even considered gainy in the first place. Then again, very high front end gain is cool if you want something that is so distorted and compressed that it covers up all your mistakes or if you are really sloppy. I love taking a mesa recto and using the most gainy settings and rolling the master all the way back. All you have to do is tap with both hands anywhere at all on the fretboard ... doesn't even matter what note you hit

Zero dynamics and they all sound the same. Poor kids don't seem to enjoy the occasional mistake which in later years turns into a glorious gem.

Crikey Unfortunately, that never happened before I traded the 6545 away to Drew for his RXES. But I do have clips of both on my gear page - I don't know how comparative they are, but you might be able to hear what you're looking for. Check out the 6545 at www.gear.strayca.com/6545.htm and the SRZ-65 at www.gear.strayca.com/SRZ-65.htm
