I don't own a Dr. Z, but I've been very interested in the Carmen Ghia. I like the simplicity of a tone knob and a volume knob, mainly because I'm probably more of a guitar player than spending time dialing in the best sound.
I'm curious about the main differences between the Carmen Ghia and the Maz Jr. or Sr.'s. I don't know much about them, but I've heard a lot of people say that they are great amps.

I feel that the Ghia is a unique and beautiful sounding amp and that everyone should start there and get another Z depending on which direction you want to go. The Ghia will teach you how to use the tone pot on your guitar to tame the high end and the volume pot will be your way of controlling clean to drive. Get separate head and cab and then you can just buy heads later to expand the collection. The Maz's are very different amps than the Ghia. The Master volume makes it easier to dial in some grind if you want and the other tone controls allow you to further tweak the tone. The Maz amps are more versatile. If for some reason I couldn't keep my Maz 38 and the Ghia at the same time I would keep the Maz 38 because it more exactly suits my requirements. Other forumites will no doubt have a different opinion and I think that's a good thing.

The Ghia is one of the most unique amps I have ever owned. I loved the cleaner tones that I was getting from my Ghia & the neck pickup of my PRS. I completely agree with you billy, everyone should start with the Ghia & move out from there.

Having started with a Z-28 then a Maz 38 SR and then a Route 66 and only having the Z28 now but very interested in a Ghia and getting my Z amp stable back up to two are there any suggestions on my current Gear Aquisition Want for a Ghia and any comments on how the Ghia will compare to the Z's I have had. I said I was going to downsize so I recently sold the 66 and the Maz and I am not sorry I miss them but want to try out something different in the Z Line. I do not think I could ever get rid of the Z28 Amp. If I could only have one amp it would be the 28.

What about the Stangray? I've been hearing a lot about it, and it sounds like a great amp. My fear is that I won't be able to play it loud enough. I've been looking at buying the Carmen Ghia head, and then getting the Z-Best cab. If I were to buy a Stangray head later on, would it still sound good through the Z-Best cab?

I've got a Stang Ray on order and I haven't even heard one yet! I want a 'Ray because I want a big sweet clean tone most. If you're concerned about overall volume then you probably would want a 1 x 12 box with a more inefficient speaker instead of the Z Best. A 'Ray turned up would be pretty damn loud for most clubs, probably too loud. I haven't gigged my Ghia (I use a Maz sr 38) but if I was doing a small club gig in blues or rock I know it would be loud enough. Depending on the efficiency of the speaker, and whether or not you need much clean headroom, 15 watts can be plenty loud.
