I realized that most of my clips here are of Z amps set clean. I don't want to be accused of being a salad eating sissy (not that there's anything wrong with that) so I recorded the MAZ with 4 pedals and a voiceover letting you know what's on when. Strat into Flying Dragon into DS-1 modded Red Llama Clone Triangle Big Muff Clone Maz set up pretty clean and not too loud because it's 1 am. Pedals were set for a medium to high gain tone, but with the Dragon pushing them they saturate more. The little bit of reverb you hear is just from the amp. The Triangle Big Muff belongs to our own Erik D. I built it for him but a pot went south on it. Glad to say it's back in commission and ready to rock. Thanks for checking out my clip! You da king Eddie ! Very nice to finally hear some diffrent pedal sounds with the z.
I have an very old DS1 made in japan, wich i bought for a few bucks (new) when i was a little kid, what kind of mod have you done to your DS1 ? I rarely use my DS1 nowdays because everyone have gone down the overdrive road, and i did to, however sometimes i put the DS1 on my pedal board and use it in conjunction with my ts 808 with the dist knob at 0 i use it to fatten and tone shape my ts808 signal and it gives some interesting results.
So the question, if you loose it in all my ramblings, is should i mod my DS1 ? are there any mods wich would make it a killer effect on its own ?

As for the DS-1 mod, I might suggest that you keep your DS-1 stock since it is made in Japan. The value on the Japanese ones continues to climb and I'd be inclined to leave it as is. The Taiwanese ones are so cheap these day - you can find them on eBay for $25 to $30 - so I think it makes more sense to buy one of those and modify it. There are a bazillion different mods on the net for the DS-1. I have modified 5 or 6 of them and I have my own recipe that is a little bit Keeley Seeing Eye mod and a little bit of a "70's" style mod. I use a toggle switch to go between two Si diodes or one Si and an LED. I would be happy to send you the exact part-swap list if you like. The mod replaces less than a dozen parts and can be done in less than an hour if you have some soldering/ modding experience. This latest recipe is by far my favorite. A little like the sound of a Box of Rock cranked and with slightly fuller mids. The DS-1 soundclip above has the tone rolled back a little for a darker tone, but you can go from dark to bright no problem. Peace, Eddie

Sounds great Eddie. The MAZ eats pedals like no other amp I've played. Gotta love it.
Thank you......good night!

It would be super nice Eddie if you would like to share your modding knowledge with me. Then i can skip making all the misstakes and go directly to a good mod. I think the description of your mod sounds very interesting. If you feel like it, please send me the parts list, if you dont want to, or havent got the time right now i understand.

Andersson,
You got it! Here's the recipe:
You will change 5 capacitors to the following values:
C2 = 1uf C3 = .022uf C5 = 1uf C9 = 1uf C10 = .1uf
Two resistors need to be replaced:
R16 = 2.2k R17 = 15k
Then change the 2 clipping diodes:
D4 = Si N4001 D5 = Si N4001 (or a 3mm red LED)
I use a toggle switch to select between a silicon diode _or_ LED at D5. In one position on the toggle, the pedal is using a Si N4001 at D4 and D5 while in the other toggle position the pedal is using one Si and one LED for clipping. With two Si N4001 diodes, the tone is tight and smooth. With one Si and the LED in combination, the tone is louder and more tube-like.
I can send you a wiring diagram for the switch if you like - just shoot me a pm.
Peace, Eddie

wow Eddie, great demo! Thanks for sharing! Great tones there. The first one with the Flying Dragon won me over immediately...I'd like to hear more of the Dragon and the amp

Hahahaha, I love the ending Eddie, AWESOME sign off!
Great tones there too! I have an Analogman Modded DS-1 with the added mid-knob and it's pretty amazing for that higher gain sound. I've never abused the "hair" knob on the Red Llama clone too much, but its cool to hear it that way. I'm going to have to try it. I've gotten into the habit of just barely dialing in the hair at around 9 O'clock on the one you made me. I've been playing with an acoustic singer songwriter friend lately and that pedal with a touch of delay is great with my strat and my Z for that style of playing.

Thanks guys - it's fun to crank the gain!
Jonathan, I like the RL with the gain low myself. I dig the "slightly hairy" boost thing it has going on. The grind is there if you need it, but I agree with you that it excels in the lower gain sounds. Almost tweed-like maybe?
Anyway I may have to record some stuff showing the Dragon at various levels by itself. I stuck a tone knob on mine and it can do a beautiful thick boost as well as the bright/clear thing.
Peace, Eddie
