Is it possible to run a 5Y3 rectifier in the Route 66 instead of the standard GZ34 to lower the wattage? I'm trying to get this amp to give me some output distortion grind at a reasonable volume. I don't want to use pedals, and I don't like attenuators.
Thoughts?

If you haven't yet, try maxing the bass and treble controls. This will give you some more grind at lower volumes.

Thanks for the 5U4 hint- with a re-bias this should do the trick. Yeah, I've tried maxing out the tone controls- the problem is with P-90's the tone just gets too nasty when you dime the treble and engulfs a room when you dime the bass. I appreciate the feedback.

I'm doing the 5U4 thing and I can tell that there is more sag, but I would not say there is more drive. However, it's hard to compare between rebiasing because it takes at least 5-10 minutes to do it safely.

The 5Y3 gets really hot and rattles like heck in this amp, agree with the 5U4 or a 5V4 both work fine, but the GZ 34 seems to sound "right " in this amp.

I'm running a 5V4 in my 66 it sounds VERY cool. Different but good. More sag, little quicker breakup.
