Hey,
I have a bunch of gigs in places where even a 1x12 (Red Fang) and Mini-Mass are a bit of overkill.
Has anyone run into a 1x10, or ? for very small applications?
How about recommendations for a good, quiet 1x12 speaker?
Just wanna use my 66 more!
Thanks!
- Jim

That may be tough, since the 66 peaks way over the 32W it has been rated at.
You may have to go with a small, low wattage and low efficiency speaker and keep the volume on the 66 way down so you don't blow the speaker out of it's box.

A greenback sounds great with the 66, but you'll run the chance of blowing it up if you run it too loud.

Not so much about the cab as it is about the speakers. That Red Fang is one of the most efficient Alnicos on the planet. Translation, you will get maximum volume/watt. I had the exact same issue with my Stingray, so I loaded a Weber Alnico Blue Dog per some advice from this forum. Much less efficient than my Celestion Blues and working out great...Second the comment on the Greenies, but you'll need two of 'em. They are one of the most inefficient speakers in production. Good luck and get that Red Fang outta there. That puppy will demolish your ears!

I use the red fang as well, and I second the idea of a Weber blue. I talked to Ted about this, and he siad he could custom make a Weber blue for a similar tone with a small magnet. It will decrease the overall SPL quite a bit, but it will also reduce the bass response significantly.
I have a 50 watt Weber blue alnico, and I like it with most amps, but its a bit dark with the 66. I would get a 30, which is brighter and more aggressive sounding.
My solution was to use my 210 with a pair of alnico Weber 10's (silver and blue) it sounds great if slightly darker than the Red Fang, good bass response, and noticable volume cut (about 5dB) on the SPL meter. I tried a single 10 Weber, but it sounded pretty sad on the low notes.
I use the Red Fang for more volume and presence, and the Webers for lower volume.

I have three Bogner speaker cabinets at 8 ohms and then I made a series box so I can present the head with either an 8 ohm single cab or a series of 16 ohms with two cabinets of different drivers and box construction. For small rooms I play my 66 with a Bogner cube and an Airbrake. Or a Bogner metropolis cab with Alnico Blue 15 watt. The underated speaker will go into cone distortion from the 32 watt 66 head when you want it to. Also this open back cab has to be placed with attention to the room acoustics so you can use the back wave to your advantage and get some deep bass. Larger rooms need a ported sealed enclosure and I use my Bogner Shiva sealed cabinet with a Celestion Classic 80 which doesn't give me speaker break up but gives me very directional tone because the cab is sealed and front ported. I use an airbrake to open up the overdrive in the amp and dial down the volume with the airbrake.
My favorite set up is a series connection of my 8 ohm Bogner sealed with G12H30 and an open back Bogner Metropolis with an Alnico Blue, you can place the open back to work with the room and then place the sealed Bogner to throw its' sound forward where you need it. This presents the 66 with a 16 ohm load in series and gives alot of sound, you can then airbrake it down if you wish and in the process drive the speakers into distortion. I love the tone colors I get from this combo of speakers and cabinets. You can search on eBay as I did and pay 60 cents on the dollar give or take for these cabnets, and you can carry them with your 66 head.
Every time I play this 66 head I smile whenever I hear a new sound. Like teaching a child to speak and a new word comes out. Go Dr. Z !!!
So if you have a Route 66 you need an Airbrake to keep your volume in check while your tone remains the same. IMHO, Gartunes

I bought a couple of the smaller older style Z 1x12 Cabs that I've put Tone Tubby Alnico Hemp Cones in. Cuts the percieved volume a fair amount. Mark

Doc:s 2x10" (new design - removable backplate) cab is small compact & very good sounding cab. Perhaps not exactly low volume though. Cheers: Dixiechicken!

Hi guys,
I just got my 66 last week, and haven't had much time to experiment with it. The only spare cabinet I have at the moment is a Marshall 412 with 4 Greenbacks. The 66 sounded awesome through that, but it was frickin' LOUD even run through my Hotplate. I'd love to keep that sweet tone, but also be able to bring the sound down to merely deafening levels.
I've played some different Z's through a Z-Best, and I thought the G12H/ V30 combo sounded terrific. Would this be a noticeable reduction in volume for me? How does the 66 sound with a Z-Best?
I've also considered getting a 212 with one 30w alnico Weber Silver Bell and one 30w alnico Blue Dog. Do these speakers work well with a 66? Would this be a big difference in volume compared to the Marshall cab?
Lastly, should I just get a 212 with a pair of Greenbacks? I'm sure that going from a 412 to a 212 of the same speakers drop the volume a bit. But since I've been attenuating the hell out of my signal, I'm nowhere near max volume. So am I correct in thinking that the perceived volume won't be all that much different?
Should I stop thinking about a 212, and consider either 10" speakers, or a 112 cabinet?
Many Thanks! Brad

My 66 sounds great through the Z-Best. It is a noticeable reduction in volume compared to a 4x12 but it's still quite loud.

That's good news. As it stands, my wife is NOT as big of a 66 fan as I am. :-p

Stock Z-Best is still pretty loud. Z-Best with a pair of greenbacks would scale back some of the volume. I've been thinking about this at the same time I've been trying out some of the less efficient Webers.
Problem is, there's a little bit of heaven in the Galaxie through a single Weber alnico 1265, and I haven't wanted to take the Z-Best apart to try speaker swapping.
The Rte 66 through the Z-Best is another slice of goodness altogether. Thank goodness for the Airbrake, though.
The double greenback idea was a suggestion from Eric @ Willcutts for SPL management of the SRZ. Still thinking about that one, as there are other things on my lists. A second Z-best was a bit of a curveball for me.

Well, I bought an Avatar 2x12 on ebay for next to nothing. It's loaded with a G12H30 and a Vintage 30, so it's basically a poor man's Z-best. Hopefully it will sound good. It should arrive Monday or Tuesday. I'll give a report then.

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you all know that the Avatar arrived. It's an open-back cabinet with a G12H30 and a Vintage 30. It sounds fantastic with the 66, and the speakers aren't even broken in yet. It was $299 delivered to my door. There's no way I'd call this a small and quiet cabinet, it is a lot more manageable than the 4 Greenbacks I was playing through. I'm still using the Hotplate with it with a lot of attenuation. It really does sound heavenly. With no pedals, and just the amp's distortion, it really does give me the Clapton "Beano" tone...really lush, creamy tone. It's exactly what I'd hoped the Route 66 would be. And when I run my Les Paul with the Zendrive, it's a frickin' firebreather. I am soooo in love with this amp now.

Both the G12H and the vintage 30 are 100db speakers....loud.
For quieter at home stuff, I use a closed back 1x12 with a greenback (97db) and an airbrake. Awesome with the Route 66.

That would help a little but I'm thinking not enough. When I get some extra cash I might go with a G12H30. Sensitivity is still 100db but it's only 30watts. Either that or (2) Greenbacks in a 2x12. Less efficient speaker and only 25watts each but more cone area than the 50watt Private Jack. I'm sure any of those would help you keep volumes down and still sound good without using an attenuator.

A private jack is 101 db.....that's loud. It's the 16 ohm so it's 100.3 db but yes it is loud. Thank God the amp has a volume knob
