I got a new to me Rt 66 coming in Black n Wheat... and I've played around with a few of em and I've always liked them, but I always thought it was really loud where I liked it dialed in and wasn't sure I could tame it even with my airbreak... So I always wanted to get a hold of one and just play it / try it for a while... different tubes... speakers ( I even bought a set of GT KT 66 HP's before they quite making them just in case I got one, some day) and I've ALWAYS thought this is the PERFECT amp for Shannon, right down his alley tone wise... he said he'd buy it if I get it and then I decided it wasn't for me, So Now I get to REALLY give one a good try and worst case senario... Shannon gets an amp I think along with his Ghia is perfect for his style! So here's the question my brotha's... What speakers/ cabs are you using and do you like with the 66?? What pre amp tubes are you using, and what KT 66's are you using and where do you bias them at... 33- 36 or 37ma?? Especially if anyones still using the GT KT 66 HP's. I think mine is coming with the JJ KT 66's... where are you biasing these if your using them?? if any of you are using the Chinese GT's, do you like them and where do you bias them at?? I've read up on most of the threads regarding this, but I'd really like to hear your comments and thoughts about how your using yours and suggestions for settings for me to try, speakers, tubes and anything else I might wanna know before I start the experimentation... ;D ;D ;D Thanks Jason

Hey man, congrats on the amp! I truly hope you enjoy it as much as I do (and the rest of the '66 gang). What speakers/ cabs are you using and do you like with the 66?? I used mine first with my VHT 4x12 loaded with custom Eminence 50W speakers. LOUD! Very tight and efficient speakers and the '66 was moving some serious air for sure. After a while I kinda thought it was maybe a bit too tight for the '66 and the cab started to be a hassle to lug around since it was the heaviest 4x12 I ever lifted. Sold the VHT 4x12 and got the Z-Best 2x12 (stock, 8 ohm with V30 on top and G12H on bottom). Did not play it live yet but I cranked it at home and I think this head and cab are matched very well. The big bottom heavy character of the cab works well with the thick and round '66 sound. It definitely tamed the volume even though it's still quite loud. It will be perfect for medium club stages and I won't need an attenuator like I did with the VHT cab. The only other cabs I played the '66 through was a Mesa Boogie 4x12 recto V30 loaded cab at the store and a 2x12 Mesa Boogie at a friends house and both sounded great. What pre amp tubes are you using, and what KT 66's are you using and where do you bias them at... 33- 36 or 37ma?? Especially if anyones still using the GT KT 66 HP's. I tried the following pre-amp tubes with my 66: NOS Dario Miniwatt that came with it is very nice and sounds great. Pretty much an all around great sounding EF86 and very well built. NOS GEC the was a bit nicer then the Miniwatt, not by much, just had a bit more "air" to it. NOS Mullard is what I have inside now. To my ears very similar to the other two but with a bit more raw edge to it ... I don't think it's a matter of better or worse, just personal preference. For PI, the stock Sovtek was actually very nice. I had a few different NOS 12AX7 in there and now I have a NOS Mazda 12AX7 which sounds great. It's a high gain 12AX7 and it gives it nice crunch, edge and punchy midrange. I originally had the GT KT66HP tubes in and found them to be a bit too thick for my taste, biased around 34 mA. I think mine is coming with the JJ KT 66's... where are you biasing these if your using them?? The JJ's are nice and to my ears are the brightest when compared to Groove Tubes KT66HP & KT66C. I bias around 34-36mA. They seemed the tightest as well and worked well with high-gain pedals because they did not sound over-compressed when cranked but they were a bit thin sounding on their own. if any of you are using the Chinese GT's, do you like them and where do you bias them at?? I like these the best I think. I went back and forth a few times between these and JJ's. The Chinese sound the richest with a tight bottom and nice compression when cranked. Same bias as the JJ's 34-36mA. As a side note regarding tubes ... For me, NOS rectifier made the biggest difference of all tube changes. I bit the bullet and invested in a Mullard GZ34, Valvo and some JAN Phillips 5AR4 rectos. The JAN Phillips ones are the best value since the difference in price and sound between those and the Mullards are a bit hard to justify ... but being the gear fanatic that I am, I had to get a Mullard as well. Mullard quality is tough to beat so that's what I have in there right now and hopefully will have it for a long time. However, I could not hear any difference between the Mullard and the Valvo 5AR4 if there are any, only tracing would tell and the Valvo looked as solid as the Mullard.

Here is what I saved from Z's post a few years ago:
Since I have stuffed approx. 400 RT.66's with tubes since it's release in 1998, I do have a bit of experience on the subject _Joker, and I'll try to answer your question.
Ok, looking from the rear of the RT 66 going left to right:
V1= EF-86, you will be hard pressed to greatly improve over a good Svetlana. Eric Barber and myself collaborated on EF-86 designs while he was with Svetlana, and some of the designs were posted on their site.
But being guitar players we must try to change/improve anything that generates tone.
So for V1 there are many imported EF-86's that will change the RT.66's front-end response.
Mullard shiny shield, very nice tube, slightly less gain, very top-endy in a good way. Works well with Humbuckers, but watch out with some Tele's and G&l's.
Seimens gunmetal gray shield , more gain, and a very warm tone, great with strat's, but can get muddy with some not all DARK Les Pauls.
Mazda gunmetal gray shield, close to Seimens, just not as bassey, more mid's.
Tesla made a EF-86, geat sounding, BUT very prone to microphonics.
Telefunkin low gain rich tone, but a bit HiFi, high dollar.
Amperex World Logo, low gain and very bland tone to my ears.
Now V2- I use a well balanced Sovtek 12AX7 LPS, full power, and full bandwidth.
Ei 12AX7/ECC 83 , if you can find a good one, that is a NOS dark plate, that's not microphonic ,they sound great. David Grissom uses a Ei in his RT.66.
Phillips 12AX7 WA large plate, good drive and a very warm tone.
RCA/GE both fine, slight loss of power, but nice hollow mid tone, and nice top end sparkle.
Tele's/Mullards/Brimmars, all three different but close to the same , balanced and smooth, slight loss of hair at full drive.
Ok V3 & V4 - I currently ship with version 3 Groove Tube Russian KT-66-HP. Version 1 was fine, version 2 had shorting/reliability problems. Fixed in Ver 3 as well as upping the power , hence HP or High Performance.
The Sino KT-66 is a very nice slightly lower powered tube in the RT.66. It does sound more like the GEC KT-66 then GT's. Reliability problems batch to batch, like halo getters falling loose inside the tube.
Finally V5- To get the full 40 watts at clip you must use a New Sovtek or Mullard GZ-34. If you have an older RT.66 it may have a Chinese 5AR4/GZ-34 Those were the only ones being built in 1998, replace it before it goes nuclear like they all will in less then 5 years of use.
But if you want to change the overall response of the RT.66 try a Sylvania green labeled 5U4, or a GE 5V4. Remember to adjust bias, as both of these tubes will lower plate voltage at idle, and more so at clip. Set the KT-66's from 28 to 34 mA per tube and you'll then hear the difference the rectifier makes. It will increase sustain and compression , lower overall power, and will feel spongier , which might be a good thing for you. I personally like the GZ-34 in my RT.66."

Check over at Doug's tubes, I think he still has some KT 66's that ran off the same tooling as the GT HP's.
I really like the Mullard EF-86 I got from KCA. It sounded much better to me than the Dario or my GEC. A little darker sounding, smoother and earlier break up.
For a Phase Inverter it's a no brainer for me, a Sovtek 12AX7LPS. This tube has improved every amp I own except for the Ghia which, to me, just sounds best with a 5751.
I've tried a few Rectifiers in it, all from KCA and this is what I found. Valvo:Very tight sound, lot's of punch NOS JAN Philips-Sylvania 5AR4:Quite a bit of sag, very nice sound but looses a touch of the amps aggressive nature. NOS GE 5AR4:Pretty much splits the difference of the first 2. More sag than the Valvo and more aggressive than the Philips. This was the perfect combination for me. I like to feel the amp move around a bit and I'm looking for a rock tone from this amp, pure and simple. Turn everything to 3 o'clock and kick some a$$!
I've got a pair of Scumback's in my Z-Best right now. A M75 and M55 both 25 watts. It's a nice sound at a reasonable volume, they helped bring down the overall volume in a stock Z-Best. Lot's of mids though. I may try a Weber 30 watt Alnico Silver Bell in there someday.
Which leads me to my other cab I use with the Route 66, a Bogner Shiva size 1X12 sealed and ported cab. I've got a Weber 30 watt Ceramic Silver Bell with Pre-Rola dope in it. Very nice. That Silver Bell sounds good with anything it seems. This cab really cuts down on the volume and is super useful for small club gigs. Did I mention that I liked the Weber Silver Bell?
I can't remember exactly where mine is biased at, somewhere in the middle of the road of proper spec if I remember correctly. I've got GT HP's in my Route 66 right now. Hunting down more as time goes by. Have not tried the Chinese yet. But I have the feeling that I'm gonna be "forced" to someday if things don't change soon.
As for settings, well, everything at 3 o'clock is my favorite. LOL In my opinion the amp doesn't come alive till all the controls have hit 9-10 o'clock then it seems to wake up. But no matter where you set the Treble and Bass controls you'll find a useable sound. It might LOOK goofy but you'll smile everytime after the first note.
It's loud, but a good ported and sealed 1X12 with the right speaker, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised Jason. Congrat's on the 66!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jason

Well alrighty then!.... You show me your RX (ES,jr) I'll show you my 66! ;D I run a British military GEC EF86, stock PI, GEC kt66's, and a Mullard Steel based GZ-34 (1954) so my 66 is pretty souped up! I LOVE the Z best with the 66. I also like my 1-12 Ulbrick which is much less efficient. It has a custom made Celestian Heritage speaker that is between a Vintage 30 and a Greenback. Like a greenie with tighter bottom end and is rated at 35 watts, This works great for being able to crank it in smaller places. It's still loud but with an aggressive drummer it's about perfect. I'm only speculating but I would think the Celestian Gold would be a GREAT speaker for a 1-12 with the Route 66. I'd love to hear your opinion if you get the chance. In general I find the Route 66 to be just about the perfect power rating. Nothing's perfect of course, especially without a master but it has just about the right amount of headroom for club playing, and isn't over the top loud when overdriving. It OWNS pedals, especially overdrive, fuzz, boost, high gain pedals. I can get the raunchiest modern high gain sound that will eat a Recto for dinner with just the Fulltone GT-500. With my Ulbrick 12axe I'm in Robben Ford/Carlton/Gilmore territory. My Tonefactor Hellbilly and I'm in Cream, Free, or 60's/70's glam rock heaven. Add a delay (mine is Ibanez ad-80 or TTE) and modulation if you have to (mine is Foxrox thru zero Flanger, and Boss CE-1 for Police band) and you have an incredibly versatile rig. Oh I also run a Clyde Wha (fulltone) My previous rig was a 2x60 watt stereo rack rig with multi-processors, and a four channel preamp, all midi-ed into a 100 patch board, into 2 x 1-12's or a stereo quad, and my 66 rig with pedals is far more versatile. The only thing I miss is a chimey clean, but you and I know how to fix that and you already have the solution! ;D And you don't get that meaty, rich smokey overdrive with a chimey clean... not that the 66 isn't a nice clean, most people thought the cleans on my yet to be if ever released album were fender tones and the engineer LOVED the rolled back clean tones of the 66! He has an old 63? Blackface bassman head in the studio which I have used before (listen to my tune "Undertow") and he was saying he was diggin' the 66 cleans as much. So have fun, it's not for everyone but it is for me! ;D One of the best amps ever made period! IMHO

Thanks guys, Karma for all of ya as soon as I can get you all some... Exactly what I was needing... Gonna be REALLY fun to try and a nice change of pace from the el-84's I think. I have tried/ played them before and I DO think it's one of the best amps I've ever played but I think with it the ONLY way to really find out if it's for me, was to just get one and try it for a while. So I'll just act like Curt for a minute...

I'm still using the HP's and they seem to like the bias down around 32-33 mA. Great tubes. I like the Valvo and Telefunken EF86. I have a Mullard 12AX7 in the driver (but the LPS is very good here too).
Speakers, I like the Red Fang and 30 Watt Weber blue about equally, different but very good. I think the gold would be great also.

I should add although I mentioned the gold, I prefer the whomp and thud of a closed back cab with the 66. And of course this is where the Z Best delivers, as does an old marshall quad with greenies.

Jason, I've got a real early Route 66; it's got a slightly different transformer set than the later ones, so YMMV. Mine sounds very warm and "smoky"; it's not real distorted or overdriven even cranked up. It needs help from something like a treble booster to really do the Beano thing.
I run mine with a GEC EF86, various balanced phase inverters from Doug or KCA, and a set of GT KT66's. I've had my set of NOS GEC KT66's in there, and believe it or not preferred the GT's. The GEC's had a better, clearer high end and more detail but the GT's have a midrange drive that I like.
I've been all over the map from 32mA-37mA over the years just testing the waters, but always returned to around 32mA, which is where it was set from the factory. Then again, I'm more of a "clean with a little hair" player.
I always run mine through my Z-Best. I did get a new 1X12 convertible cab a couple of weeks ago with a G12H30, but haven't had time to try it with the 66 yet.
Then again, as Curt said once, I've heard a lot of variation in all the Route 66's I've come across. I think it has more to do with the amp's sensitivity to tube changes than differences in components from one amp to the next (except mine with it's different trannies).
Hope this helped,
Phil

Hi "jgleaton" - DC here! I'm with my Route66 finally - as you probably know. Who haven't heard? My current tube complement is: 1)Pre-Amp NOS Dario Minwatt EF86 (the stock tube) (also have european miltary british Ef86 I bought from nitehawk55) 2) PI-tube. a NOS Telefunken ECC83/12AX7 from mid 70:ies 3) Power-Tubes: Matched pair of NOS G.E.C KT66 (1971/75) matched within less than 3 mAmps 4) A NOS JAN Phillips GZ34/5AR4 Check this thread for some bias results after tube swapping: drzamplifiers.proboards41.com/index.cgi?board=route&action=display&thread=1192747252I use mine with a 2x10" Z-cab - new design - with removable backplate. Its very neat and compact. I use the cab with the backplate in place - it gives me a fairly thick balanced tone with lots of volume and good artculation and projection. Check this link for some soundclips: mbsb.psy.umu.se/clips/clips.htmlCheers: Dixiechicken!

Myles said to set the bias at 36ma. So that's what I did and I haven't played around with it.
With humbuckers: When I can, I prefer to use a greenback in a closed back cabinet. (1x12) VERY Marshall sounding. (go figure) The 97or 96db rating allows for smaller amounts of attenuation. But I wouldn't run the 66 and the greenback without an attenuator. For live gigs, I need an open back so the backline can hear me, but I've got a Vintage 30 in it. LOTS of upper midrange Marshall honk going on...and it's a bit brighter. (probably due to the open back)
For starting out, I'd set all three dials to 3:00. After that, the only adjustments I make are to the bass. Sometimes I'll lower it to 1:00. Doing this lets more of the higher mids come out. Having the volume control below about 1:30 is a waste of time with this amp. (for me anyway) Keep in mind, the treble & bass controls are BEFORE V1/ef86, so turning these knobs past 12:00 adds crunch as well as volume. I almost always have to use an airbrake with this amp.
I've got a Dario miniwatt in the ef86, a matched phase inverter and the GT equivalent for my KT66's.
Just as people say that the 66 allows for every little detail of the guitar to come through (type of pickup, etc.), the same goes for speakers. More than any other amp, you can hear the subtle differences in speakers.

I'd still like to know how the Route 66 sounds with a 5u4 Rectifier. Doc says he likes it, more sustain, less power and headroom and almost tweed characteristic. Sounds like a great solution for those with the 66 that have volume troubles. I won't be changing mine but it would be interesting to have another with the 5u4 biased and ready to do lower powered gigs or overdriven gigs at friendlier volume. Jason, if you try this, let me know how it goes.

I've read up on most of the threads regarding this, but I'd really like to hear your comments and thoughts about how your using yours and suggestions for settings for me to try, speakers, tubes and anything else I might wanna know before I start the experimentation... ;D ;D ;D Thanks Jason Jason...Congrats on the 66. I think I was watching that one and you got a great deal!! I run mine with the GT KT66 HP. I really like them and find them a little darker than the other ones I have tried. My fav cab is a Dr Z 4x10

Either that, or wait till next Z Fest when you get up on stage....and that huge Southern soul singer comes out of you.... you killed at last years Z Fest (well, Jason helped too).... Amy and I are still talking about how you guys set the bar so high. The only thing small about you is your ego. The rest- talent, humility, and (according to Amy!) cuteness are huge. And your BBQ sauce rules. Thanks Phil. This helps, but Jason's knives cut deep. ;D *modified cause I can't spell*Sorry for the hijack Jason. (I laughed my butt and I don't have much to spare, I was sticken a case of 'no-assatall and infantile genitalia at birth). I got the honor of standing next to Shanon on stage, maybe my memory is bad but I could have sworn he was 7 feet tall. OK maybe 6' 11 and 1/2" or at least sounded that way? Contrats on the 66. Curt got mine before I really knew now to work the mojo out of it. Nice amp and I would like another one day, just waitin for Curt to give up another one.

Gratz on the R66!
I use the following:
NOS Dario Miniwatt EF-86 in V1, a stock PI (Sovtek 12AX7 LPS), Valve Art KT-66's and a NOS RCA 5U4GB rectifier.
I have the KT66's biased at 40ma (which is pretty high). I like the sag and the volume drop the 5U4GB gives the amp.
I'm playing it through a 2x12 Avatar cab with two ceramic Weber 1225's with pre-rola treatment. I use the same cab with my Germino Club 40. It sounds great with both amps.

Just switched to JJ KT66 and biased to 34mA
speaker cab favorite is Bogner cube 8 ohm sealed cab with G12H30 and open back 8 ohm Bogner Metropolis with Alnico Blue Celestion. You can place the open back to work the back wave with the room for the best bass and then bring the cube, with its forward firing port into the area you want to project your tone.

Well all you 66'ers, so far... Smokey and thick... yep, sweet. and I haven't changed ONE thing with re: to the tubes or bias... it was set up really nice right like it is. But I MUST say somethings surprised me... The speakers that I like the best so far. Now I've always liked the silverbell and it is probably my favorite speaker... But a single 50 watt alnico silverbell KILLS with the 66... KILLS! Weber bluedog 50 watt alnico is really really nice too... that surprised me as I thought I'd like the ceramics the best. Greenback, G12's nice... single tone tubby kinda farts out when really driven so I'd need two to drive em. tone tubby with the Maz SR/ and especially the JR is perfect. A MAZ SR run through a single ceramic tubby and the Rt 66 run through a single alnico silverbell at the same time cranked is... just in a word... wow. I think I'm basically an EL-84 kinda guy, and I think I'd miss the EL-84 thing just using the 66, but it is REALLY fun... and a nice combination using WITH the EL-84's. Big sound... So I'm still having fun experimenting... ;D Jason

Grab some humbuckers, a germanium fuzz and play some T-Rex or classic British rock! ;D My friend just bought a quad which I may have to borrow for a gig if I can find a space on "stage" for it. You might also like the sound through a Z 4-10 Jason. Any in your vacinity?
