i'm currently running a 212 greenback cab and am building a 112 cab i'm undecided whether to keep the 212 as both greenbacks and put a V30 in the 112 or have a greenback/V30 212 cab and put a greenback in the 112 i figure the V30 112 will be louder than a 212 greenback/ V30 or 2 greenback cab- looking for more versatility tonally i loved the 212 greenbacks when tried against a V30 212 cab all are open back any suggestions greatly appreciated- in Australia it is near impossible to get much more exotic stuff to listen to

i take it from the name you are in tassie? i've been using the carmen ghia for a year now- love it- as you know not a lot of gigs around where u can push a larger amp- and the tone! u don't find a rt 66 too loud? or using an attenuator? (i've got a weber mini mass) who do u import speakers and stuff from? all the best

Yep, moved back to Tassie after living in Melbourne for 11 years. The Route 66 and Z Best sound great at any volume. I use pedals for cover gigs and run it clean without attenuation but for my own gigs I just crank it up. I have an airbreak which I use only when I have to. I've used the mini on some duo/accoustic gigs and a small cover gig too.
I've bought just about everything from Mass Street Music in Kansas. Also my guitar from Wildwood in Colorado. Check out Dave Ulbricks pedals, speakers, (and amps) if you get a chance (from Melbourne) Quality stuff. I haven't tried the speaker boxes but my friend Simon Patterson says they are absolute killers! i'd love a Ghia too!

i wonder whether we worry too much about gear? it's amazing how close in volume all the amps are isn't it- more about clean headroom and after all we're after that edge of distortion or great output distortion having said that i suppose different amps are more flavours like guitars, pickups, diff versions of tubescreamers etc this from a man whose only (and i mean only) piece of unmodified gear (by himself) is his carmen ghia the ghia is the best amp i've used- and my 65 vibrolux was very highly rated after a rebuild, likewise my 63 princeton- only thing close was a samson era green 212 matchless chieftain- haven't heard the rt 66 in real life though!

Buster, I prefer a single V-30 with a Ghia.

Keep in mind that the Greenback is 98 db sensitivity, while the V30 is 100db sensitivity. The V30 will dominate the sound of the Greenback/V30 2x12 combination. 2 db is a significant difference in volume. Theoretically, is doesn't sound like a good match IMHO.

thanks guys- i agree about the match in db- confusion relates to article on re speakering your combo on the celestion site- recommends the two together interesting though

hey tele 62 is the v30 very bright and detailed with the ghia?- do you get any sense that the ghia is pushing the speaker- i wonder if there would be any cone break up like with a greenback?

The two V-30's I have are the least brite of the speakers I have (Ceramic Blue dog, Jensen RI P-12-Q, Eminence Texas Heat). They are my favorite with every Z amp I have/have had (MAZ Jr, Route 66, Ghia, Z/28, Stingray). Maybe I am just used to them, but they work for me, Tele's, Strat, Lester, Southern Rock, Blues, Traditional, New and Alt. Country, Root's music. The V-30 is a fairly loud speaker, I normally can not push my amps hard enough to get the cones to break up, but that, to me, is where the V-30 shines, it has that kinda nasty mid range even when not pushed, and I like a nasty mid range ;^).
LotZ of guy's do not like 'em, I happen to favor a V-30. YMMV. I do not have a greenback to compare, although I'd like one. Due to the volumes I have to gig at, I am on the hunt for a less effecient speaker with the sound of a V-30.

I've always been a fan of the Greenback. If I had to choose between the Greenback & the V30, I would ALWAYS choose the Greenback.

Let me know your findings of searching for a speaker that is not efficient, but has the sound of a V-30. I'm searching too.

My old Kendrick blackframes sound somewhat like a V-30 and I know they are less efficient, despite what Kendrick says. Mine are some of the first ones so they may be different than later ones. If you find them used they are usually cheap because nobody likes them. I had one in my Reverend Hellhound and it worked well in it. You can hear this setup on T-Bone Shuffle on my band's website, see the link down below.

hi, I'm new to the site and not yet a Z owner , though I have my sights on a Ghia head, (anyone have one for sale for a reasonable price??). speaker wise might I suggest a G12L (25 watt) perhaps. all the magic of the greenback (G12M) but w/ a smaller magnet and a way sweet tone. I have one in my '66 princeton (modded to a 12" b4 I owned her), and she sounds awesome. big sweet warm tone, light weight speaker. I use my '66 bassman head through her too for recordings and she's just killing! ;D I have a pair of G12H30's also and I'm thinking of getting a 1x 12" cab for the Ghia and popping in either the H or the L depending on the gig. thanks for reading. look forward to joining the Z crew ASAP.
