Hey everybody,
I picked up a Rt. 66 at a great price on eBay and waited excitedly for 2 weeks to get it. I was really excited when it arrived today but I'm wondering if there's something wrong.
When I play there's a buzzy distortion sound underneath the notes. It does this with the tone controls and volume low but it gets a LOT worse as I turn the bass and treble controls up. With everything dimed it's a really nasty buzzy distortion
Just to clarify, this is a nasty buzzy distortion, NOT the kind of distortion we guitarists like. Could this be a tube problem?
Best, Dan

Yes, it very much could be a tube problem. Sounds like you may have a bad EF86 tube.
Pop in another EF86 and see if that solves your problem. (it's the small tube closest to the input jack)
If not, then I'd try another set of KT-66 tubes. (ones you know are good)
Don't change all the tubes at once, because you won't know which is the bad tube. Change the preamp tubes one at a time, and the two power tubes together.
You must be carefull not to mix up the two small tubes. One is the EF86, and the other is the phase inverter, a 12AX7. Even though they'll fit in each others socket, they will not work.
Sorry, but EF86's and KT-66 aren't the cheapest.
And welcome to Route 66 World!!
Remember, the tone controls act like tone controls below 12:00. Above that, they're both tone controls and gain controls. For most, all the real tweaking takes place with the tone controls between 12:00 and full.
Let us know what happens.

Hey dobermandan,
I would say if you did not have the amp retubed since you've had it that it very well could be the tubes.
Would be a good idea to ask this in the "Ask The Experts" section also.
Congrats on the new purchase and welcome to the forum.

Thanks, guys! I appreciate the info and also the "welcome". I know I'm gonna love this amp once I get everything re-tubed.
Can I get new tubes for this from Dr Z? If not, where would you recommend I order tubes?
Best, Dan

Dan,
DougG's links are the best. Use either of them. While you're at it, you might want to get a Matched Phase Inverter (MPI). It's the 12AX7 tube.
