Yeh it suprised the heck outta me as well. I've seen them go for as low as $950. The second hand ebay market can be wierd. I remember a KT45 getting passed in with no bids for $950 a few months back. It wouldn't happen now. Iv'e got really bad GAS right now and I'm ready to pull the trigger on another "Z". I'm not sure which one though. ;D

Its a great looking amp, and it has a nice cover, but still a bit steep considering it has stock tubes.

Maybe it was the exact color combo that someone was looking for, and they just had to have it. As far as ads go, it was a decent one. The photos were well done and supersize-able. I think that little things can make a difference.
Then again, two agressive bidders fighting each other makes for a successful auction.

I bid on this amp and I was stunned at the final price.
There was a recent sale on Ebay of a Route 66 for around $870.00
Go figure!

If anyone wants to buy this for $1425, let me know. It includes a padded cover, and a spare set of GT KT-66.

Hey, guys. That was my Route 66 you are talking about. I was a little surprised myself it sold for so much. I guess word got out that it was owned by me & the price just shot up way high.

I picked up my blonde for $1100 paypal'd and shipped, and I felt pretty good about that. Totally worth it too.

Looks like there was a bidding war in the last 15 minutes that drove the price up. It is still worth it as it was like new and came with a nice cover.

Recently a store here had one for sale at $1,295. I'm sure they came down to maybe $1,200. Guitar Center had one for $1,395. I don't know what it sold for but it did sell.

Mine was a private sale, and although I've seen them go for less, it was black with tan grillcloth, and came with an NOS EF86. Just like I'd wanted. $1100 shipped and paypal'd seemed fair to me as well.
Worth it?
Umm, at full price on a new one it would still be worth it. There might be newer models that catch the eye, but there's something immediate about the Route 66 that folks owe it to themselves to experience.

That just shows you what idiots work at Guitar Center. I would buy it too at that price! He immediately made about $300!

What I forgot to mention was this guy also spent close to $350.00 on repair and retube work, but all on all he still got a nice amp all serviced up for a fair price.

pittsburghplayer: That was me who bought the amp and it was $960 I paid with the tax and then around $300 to fix and retube cuz the previous owner had Tung SoL tubes in it that Dr Z recommends against and the steel band shorted out socket. I bought that speaker cab on ebay so it didn't come with it. Also had a problem with the rectifier socket and Rick re-soldered that and re-biased. Good as new and sounds great but when I went to another open stage the other day in Monroeville, PA the one guy in the house band was plugged into some Fender Blues Deville type amp which looked like a 2 x 12 or 4x10s and he had a small Marshall solid state headphone out plugged into the input and the Fender set on 1 and he completely drowned me out and I had the 66 dimed along with an OCD and Keeley Java Boost and my guitar all dimed and still nowhere near loud enough to compete. Any way to make these louder short of a re-wire? Would more speakers help? I was just running into a 1x12 Celestion Vintage 30 (60 watts) but wondered if 2 of those would sound louder?

Well Frank, I hate to say it but maybe your 66 isn't quite right yet. NOTHING drowns me off stage even playing through my inefficient 1-12 speaker. And I predominantly play in loud rock outfits. Through the Z-Best my 66 will keep up with anything and blow most away. Certainly I would overpower anyone playing a 2-12 Blues Deville. I've had 100 watt modern marshall guys with quads laugh at my little 66 and 1-12 set up and then I've totally blown their rigs off stage. If I were you I'd count my losses and send it back to Doc to make sure it's the way it should be. At least then you know for sure and can make up your mind from there whether the amp is for you or not.

taswegian: THanks but I just checked on those and the Blues Deville has 4 x 10 speakers and I think it's 60 watts. I think the 10 watt Marshall plugged into it had something to do with it's massive volume and the amp is running great and all biased etc. by a top amp tech here but I'm tellin ya it sounded great when I played alone with the drummer but when that other guy cranked his up I was lost in the mix. He also was using one of tose Zoom modeler things that boosted his up some as well I woudl imagine. If you'e ever been to a live Blue Oyster Cult concert that's how loud this guy was playing. No b.s.! I was shocked how loud it was but it sounded great.

Hey great to hear from you kich! I'm out by Irwin now and play there at the Eagles on Thursdays and in Monroeville they just started a new rock-blues open stge thats fantastic at the legion. Nice folks and big music fans around 200-300 people but only 2nd Friday of each month. Here's my setup areyouexperienced.net/Dr-Z-Route-66-Amplifier.htm I also have a 2x12 Cab but thinking of using a Celstion V-30 and G12C. Check it out. Maybe we can plug them in and compare tone and volume sometime!
