I'll be picking up my Route 66 from the good folks at Black Creek pretty soon. And I'm very excited about it. I originally heard a Prescription ES combo at a guitar show a while ago and was intrigued. Then I started reading more about the Carmen Ghia. While at Black Creek, Matt listened to me A/B between my 65 DR and the Ghia and the Maz 18. After a short while he suggested what might be a better fit would be the Rte 66. Man, he was right. Now my only question is whether to pick up a 2x12 cab or a 4x10. I've always been a sucker for the 10s but I suspect the 2x12 might have a bigger bottom. What say you all?

With the Z-best I suspect you'd get more bottom ( based on testimonials here on this board ) - but with any other open back 2x12 I wouldn't be so sure.
The 4x10" have a lot more surface area than 2x12" so - maybe it would also depend on the actual speakers used in the various configs?

My '66 sounds HUGE through my VHT 4x12 with custom Eminence 50W speakers ... I don't think I would be able to play it through anything else.
BUT ... I did play it through a Mesa Boogie Recto 2x12 (not sure what speakers are inside of those) and it sounded great as well.

Both cabs have LOTS of bottom end. I've never done a head to head but I'd guess they're pretty similar.

Wise choice!! All hail the Route 66!!
I'd go for a 2x12 cabinet myself. Actually, a Route 66 with ONE 12 inch speaker is still really loud. Louder than any club gig I'll ever play.
Yeah, once every couple of YEARS you get to play a big stage at a really loud volume. But for me, it's club gigs and I always have to use the Airbrake.

I've relied on my 22 watt '65 DR (original owner) for years. I thought that I was missing out by not having a 100 or even a 50 watter. Turns out that I can blow out a room by turning the DR up to 4. Never had the thing beyond 6. My electric gigs are pretty much restricted to 150 person wedding/Bar Mitzvah type things or clubs. A cranked 100 watter would be overkill. Frankly, I think the Ghia would have been just fine also, volume wise. But the sound of the 66! Man!

I run one 66 through a 4x10 & the 2nd 66 through the Zbest 2x12...best tone I have ever had!! If I had to choose only one cab it would be the 4x10. Lots of punch, but a little less bottom than the 2x12 ...but more than enough IMO.

DC here! Go to the Sounds thread on this board. I have posted 8 new clips that show some of the differences between - my Z 2x10" with the removable backplate in place and a hornloaded 1x12" cab loaded with a EVM12L speaker. drzamplifiers.proboards41.com/index.cgi?board=soundfiles&action=display&thread=1194185440To my ears the 2x10 cab is both a lot brighter and with a bit deeper bottom end. The 12" horncab sounds darker, less bright but also a bit more scooped mids - a litlle hollow sounding. Cheers: Dixiechicken!

congrats on the new rt66. black creek is a great place. lot of real cool stuff you can't find locally.
IMHO there isn't a bad match w/the 66. it has so much low end, that its gonna come out with any speaker. i have a Zbest 2X12, and a new convertible 2X10. both sound great.
i say get the Zbest first, because its a magical match, and add the 4x10 later, both cabs will give you so much variation, with any amp you use. point is, you really can't go wrong. ;D

Thanks guys. Really like the clips and photos. They help a lot. I've been so out of my mind busy these days, I haven't even had time to go up there and pick up the '66. I may have to call them and have them ship it to me. But that would take all the fun of going up there and playing through it for a while. After the cab, which will probably be a 2x12, there'll have to be decision made regarding attenuators. Thanks again, guys! Marty
