New Route 66 head, played thru a closed Bogner cabinet with 2 12" speakers-lead 80 and 30. Barber LTD low gain overdrive, and a Z-Vex Box of Rock for more drive/distortion. Playing a Strat with Texas Specials and a Tom Anderson Cobra.
The Barber is the best overdrive unit I've tried, and the Box of Rock will make the 66 roar like an old Marshall fully cranked at reasonable volumes.
Highly recommend-you've got to hear it to believe it. Thanks Doc! ;D

All Stellar, but individual. My current one is brighter, less smokey, less mid range, earlier break up and more like my '68 Pro Reverb than any of the others.

Uneckteke, many congrats on your 66. Funny thing about the 66's sounding different. I have had 4 as well and even with the same tubes they were different. For some reason I seem to like to older ones, made in about 1999 or 2000 the newer ones I had were a little tighter and with more treble... maybe good for some folks but I wanted some grind and midrange girth :-) The one I have now 1999 has a good balance of everything.

Mine is a 1998 and its much fatter and "looser" than the new ones I hear. I like it a lot.

The one I have kept has that fatter, looser sound. Its not flabby but just has an old school mojo that is way cool. The one I had a year ago was to tight and trebly, no matter what I did I could not mellow it out. I don't know why the ones from 5-7 years ago sound different (maybe a new one off the shelf would be great) but for my money I'm keepin' my older one.
Just as a side note, I played it today with the Z Best with Scumbacks. Volume on 2-3 treble on 2 bass on 11 with just a Strat with Fralin Blues Specials and a steel poled 43 bridge pickup. It sounded great.... I also put into the mix that new Dragon pedal as a boost and I could go from clean to major breakup with just the knob on my strat. FAT FAT FAT.....

Dunno, two of them, my favorite and this current one, are both 2003 ? 2003 was a particularily good year for the Route 66 Side note, the PI is the only stock tube in my 66 and everytime I've tried to change it to something "cooler" I've put it straight back in. Somehow the amp didn't sound as "Route 66y" without it. I reckon that tube has a lot to do with the overall sound of the 66.

Unfortunately the island gig came and went this Easter. My actor partner was away on an acting gig and I had to stay home and look after our child and I was also broke and couldn't really afford it. Such a Rockpig aren't I? Bit of a shame, but I think it's becoming a bit of a yearly thing, so maybe next year. Not sure who turned up beside all the pro surfers of the world but Eddie V was trying to get Neil Y there as it's a very cool place and Eddie said Neil would love it. I know they were trying to get Colin Hay there too and he is one of my idols. Ce La Vie
