Has anyone experimented with different tubes to get an earlier breakup?

Nope. Mine is perfect as it left Maple Heights.

With full and half power and the two volumes why? But try it...

Yes. I am using "soft" rated Groove Tube 6V6GT tubes in place of the stock JJ. I like the way these tubes sound. They have a bit earlier breakup that is very controllable and sweeter more open high end. I think they make the amp sound better, and it they are also available in higher ratings that provide more headroom. What you can also try is using a 5751 tube in V1, which will cut the gain and make the power tubes work a little bit harder. But 5751's sound different from 12AX7's so you'll need to evaluate that too.

Nope...and I'm not even going to try the 5751. I liked it in my Maz Jr....but I'm going to skip trying it in the Remedy.

I don't understand why anyone would want to mess with any Tubes in any Z amps. I think the Dr. knows what he's doing. Why mess with success. If it aint broke don't fix it.

I would agree that the Dr. does his homework, but then again how many threads are about swapping speakers? I played around with a couple different speakers in my Z-Best and came to conclusion that his choices -- speakers I don't typically like -- work best because the cabinet was designed for them. But people will tweak anyway. Some of us just can't help it.
So much of this is personal preference, and tubes are a no risk proposition. If your ears like it, then it's ok.

In the Tubes thread there is message from the Dr. on experimenting with different tube rectifiers. The Remedy of course does not have a rectifier, but you get the point.
Have fun: You have the Doctor's permission.

I love mine 'as is' - if I were to try any, it'd be for later breakup, not earlier.

I dig my Remedy stock...but I am always open to hear other tube suggestions.
Some lower numbered Groove Tube 6V6's might give a bit more breakup at lower volumes. Just a thought...
I won't mess with the 5751 in V1. I likey the 12ax7 in there!

The Remedy is the only amp I own that I didn't almost immediately start trying different tubes. It just sounded so perfect I didn't want to mess with it. The Doc does a great job of designing his amps to sound great with the new production tubes. I've had mine for about 7 months and have not even thought about changing a thing.
Not to hijack the thread but does anyone one know how long the 6v6s are expected to last in this amp? I know with my el84 based amps I would have noticed a decline by now and would have already replaced them.

I don't understand why anyone would want to mess with any Tubes in any Z amps. I think the Dr. knows what he's doing. Why mess with success. If it aint broke don't fix it. Well, to the contrary, I had always wanted an amp with GEC Kt66's. I went hunting for the best amp to put them in and after much consideration, chose the Route 66. So I was actually finding the best amp for the tube, rather than the best tube for the amp. There is something "holy grailish" about that tube. Also the NOS ef86 and GZ34 last way longer (if not forever) than the stock ones so it's peace of mind. I don't think I'll mess with the Remedy though.

This is my first 6V6 amp and so I have no idea what to expect as far as valve life.

The NOS 6V6's in my old Deluxe Reverb were in that amp for 3 years of monthly gigging and weekly practice and still tested basically as new. My understanding is that the life of a 6V6 is an eternity compared to an EL84.

My understanding is that the life of a 6V6 is an eternity compared to an EL84. Depends entirely on the design of the power amp though. For example, a class A design (like the Vox AC30) basically runs the tubes wide open all the time, but a class A/B (like the Deluxe) has them idling except when you play. I would expect tube life to be dramatically different in those two scenarios. I don't know anything about how the power amp in the Remedy works, so I wouldn't be able to comment on tube life in this amp without more info from the Doc.

I am getting ready to play around with some NOS Blackburn Mullards and some Amperex Bugle Boys on that side of the amp. I may plunk in some Tungsrams and Telefunken's too. I have yet to find an amp that doesn't sound better with NOS preamp tubes.
The latest was my son's Carr Mercury. Completely revalved it and we both notice a much better tone in multiple ways. I need my son to come into town and play so I can listen.......and because I sux.
Anyone in the KC area want to give this a try let me know. I got the tubes, the Remedy and the Z-best.
