Has anyone tried a Route 66 running through an open back 1x12 cab loaded with either the Heritage G12-65 or G12H 30 from Celestion? The 66 may be the next amp I look into, but I'm thinking about getting a 1x12 cab to run it through to help me control the volume a little bit better for the size gigs I do. Any thoughts on what to expect?

I think you'll love it man! I prefer the 66 thru an open back, unless it's a Z-best which sounds really "open" too. It's a very smoooooth amp with a signature compression touch, that i just like to pair up with the open cab, to excite it a bit and let some air come thru. Good call on the 1-12 for volume, and ya still will probably want an airbrake with it as well depending on the room size. As for speakers, wow, .... theres so many good choices, .... really comes down to your style, guitar, etc. whether you want a brighter or warmer speaker, etc. more or less bottom, mids etc. So subjective ya know? You see a lot of different pairings here, but the 12h-30 is fine for starters. Hard to reaaly say without knowing more about your musical style and gear. Best of luck tho!!

If the concern is volume due to "gig size", then the speaker selection may not be as important as attenuation.
I run my Rt 66 through both a Z-best w/ 50W Weber's and, at different gigs, through a Z 2x12 open back w/ the magical combo of G12H + V30. 2 very different sounding cabs, but if I'm in a small venue, I need a couple clicks of the Air Brake.
I have a Maz 38 1x12 combo w/ a G12H 30 watt speaker which also needs a click or two in the smaller gigs. I know it's a 38 watt amp vs the 66 which is a 32 watt, but I think that just going to a 1x12 cab may not be enough for your gig sizes. You may find the sweet spot on your 66 head is at a level that is unusable at the smaller venues so....... click, click.

I'll be using the Route 66 with an openback 1x12 with a Celestion V-30 this evening.

The G12H30 sounds very good with the Rt 66 in an open back. I also have a Celestion Blue in an open back and together they sound great.

By the time I sold my last 66 I was running it with a single G12H and was pulling a great tone, prior to the G12H I ran a single Weber Alnico Blue Dog 30 watter and that too was nice.. Helps to control the volume for smaller places.

Why did you sell the 66 Curt, was it to fund another project or was it limited and only suited to a certain style?

Why did you sell the 66 Curt, was it to fund another project or was it limited and only suited to a certain style? Always to fund a beta test on something new/different. I could easily get by with only a Route 66...amazing amp. The last one to leave here was magical..really screwed up trading that one off
