Hi guys, I just wanted some input from you 66'ers. I recently bought a closed back Bogner 2X12 cab to use with my Marshall. The cab has two Celestion V30's. So here is my question: does anybody here use their 66 through these speakers, and if so, how does it sound? I have been lusting after a 66 for awhile, and by end of summer I will likely be ordering one.

I use a V30 in an open back cabinet. It sounds fine. I've used the V30 in a closed back too.
Route 66 with a closed back 2x12 with V30's will be awesome.

gtrman, nice avatar! Connery will always be James Bond to me, although Roger Moore was not too bad. Definitely a little more "pretty boy" than Connery was. Anyway, I see you have a Maz and a Route 66. I feel like they are different enough to warrant owning both. How do you like owning both of them together?

I own them both because they are so different. That's why I did it.

Whether that's a good thing or bad thing depends on your needs. Tone should be great though.

Yeah, I guess I should have addressed that....Tas has it right....two efficient V30's (100db speakers) with a Route 66 is a LOUD amp without an attenuator.

Well I have an excellent attenuator, so that should not be much of a concern. I guess my only real concern then would be whether the 66 will have TOO much clean headroom. I really liked the way it sounded through the 2X12 Z-Best at the store. Will I have a problem getting the amp to break up running it through these speakers, or should I perhaps also cosider a speaker cab to go with it?

The G12h-30's in the Zbest are similar to V30's. Same DB rating too. V30's have less bass. The Z-best is a real bass heavy cabinet. Works REALLY well with the 66.

I played my 66 through two Bogner cube cabs. One with the V30 and the other with a G12H30. I highly recommend these cabs.
For my taste, there was plenty of clean headroom and just the right amount of growl when I stood on the thing.

Yup I play a Route 66 through a Port City Wave 1X12" cab loaded w/ a Celestion Vintage 30. This is a great setup since the Wave cab features 1 1/8" angled port running completely across the bottom of the cab. This construction allows the Vintage 30 to breath a little more than it would in a closed back cab. The result is a loud, tight, punchy cab with a broad projection. The Vintage 30 has ample power handling capability and headroom enabling the Route 66 to be cranked up for a great crunchy rock 'n roll tone. Throw in your favorite overdrive pedal (I use a Menatone Red Snapper), and you have a huge sounding rig that easily rivals a typical 2X12" cab.
I tried a Vintage 30 in a partial open back Avatar Vintage 1X12" cab and got a substantial amount of cone cry from the speaker. So I would avoid an open back cab with the Vintage 30. They are prone to cone cry in this configuration.

Yea, thats why I went with the Bogner closed back configuration. I heard about the cone cry issue too. Also, I just like the sound of a closed back better. The Bogner cab has alot of breathing room, which I agree is a must for the V30. I am glad that the consensus here is that its a good speaker for the Route 66. I cant wait untill I save up enough to buy one!
