I've got a Galaxie on order. I'm coming to the Z amps in an oddball way, as my first Z was the SRZ. I jumped onboard with the idea of a numbered limited edition, and I have no regrets.
Now, I want another amp. I'm really happy with the SRZ, but it's fun to have variety. The Galaxie appeals in that it's got a mix of a good Fender-ish clean, and the aggressive overdrive second channel. It's something that's been put together both on inspiration and on years of experience with building.
But there's a part of me that feels like I've been whistling past the Rte 66 for too long, and that it should be my next choice rather than the Galaxie. The rounded tones, the fatness, the good lower-volume cleans, the legacy, and all that. I play single coils almost exclusively, tele and strat.
This is kind of a pre-buy remorse, but it's a good thing. Birthday's coming, and the girlfriend is buying. Don't be shedding any tears, here. Heck, I've thought about buying both, but that would be disrespectful of her gift.
There's a 66 that I've seen on the web with a wood face that is just amazing. That's what turned my head.

Your girlfriend is buying? Does she have a sister? Even though I don't have the SRZ, I do know that both the SRZ and the Route 66 are in the Marshall camp. I would think a Route 66 would be more of the same. (yes, yes, I know there are differences) I do own a Maz Jr, and it's a nice offset to the Route 66. Perhaps the Galaxie will be too. Is this the 66 you saw?

It's this one. You may be right that the SRZ an the 66 are similar, but I don't know. LeftyLang thinks there's plenty of difference for him. My girlfriend has a sister, but she's married to a good guy, who makes custom furniture. Nice woodwork is good to look at and to touch.

Zimmer, I am going through the same dillemma right now! At the end of the summer, I am either gonna pick up a Route 66 or Galaxie. I dunno man, I am a big Eric Johnson fan, and having a Fender style clean with a footswitchable overdrive sounds VERY tempting! Then again, there is a Route 66 in the music store that I play EVERY time I walk in......I really cant get enough of that amp. I will hopefully be able to compare the two, but its gonna be a tough call.

You would be wise to play and compare before buying . I got my Route 66 on a trade but I had read enough on the 66 that I knew it would fit in well for what I want .
Zimmer , do you know what the Ser # is on that amp ?

I played a Galaxie at the Z-fest. It's very different than the Route 66. A real apples to oranges thing. It REALLY depends on what you're looking for.
The Galaxie is a great amp. A big hit at Z-fest.
But nothing compared to the Mazaratti GT. Doc doesn't know if he's going to put that into production....but to me it was fantastic.

The moment I read Mike's post talking about working on a Mazerati GT I felt a pain in my wallet. But what I really want to hear is how you would compare the Galaxie to the Z-28. Okay okay, I know, wrong forum section.

I was interested in the Galaxie but after hearing the clips of the Mazerati GT, I'm going to hold out for that amp.

They're both great amps. Just different. The GT is going after a pretty specific target tone wise. It's a high gain rocking amp. The Galaxie is more versitile though.
But after playing the following at Z-fest: SRZ, Evan, Galaxie, RX Jr., Mazarati GT, Z-Wreck...and others....
I'll keep my ROUTE 66!!!!!!
Just a fantastic amp.

Mighty glad to hear it "gtrman3" - since I have one on order from the Norwegian dealer. ;D ( I live in Sweden )
Also ordered the Z 2x10" cab to go with it. Already have 1x12 cab with a Mesa Black Shadow or ElectroVoice in it - cant remeber wich actually. Thinking about testing that cab with a Weber 12" Blue Dog in it.
Cheers: Dixiechicken
