Well, I bought a set on eBay for $50 and had an old pair of EL84's from an Orange AD15.
First and formost, not the same as an EL84 amp. Quirky is the best thing to describe it. Took the predictable tone adjustments right out of the amp. Very noisy at low volumes. As the volume is adjusted just audible I actually thought it sounded like I was using an octave pedal. Unusable at hgih volumes. Nothing but feedback.
I was able to dial in a nice clean, punchy sound around noon on the volume dial sound with reminded me of my Mazerati (I used to have) at about 11 o'clock on the volume dial. Much quieter, my guess due to 2 vs. 4 tubes. So there was some value in the jackets as I got a good sound or two.
So certainly not a replacement for a new Dr Z I'd love to get a Ghia someday, but certainly worth $50 to get some of the sounds unique to EL84's.

I have a set of these yellow jackets and I have not found 1 amp that I like them in. I have not used mine in 2 years. Bottom line if you want an EL84 amp just get one :-) THD is a fine company, but I don't like the yellow jackets, they thin out the amps tone way to much.

Well, I'm convinced not to use them any more.
I had posted a previous question on using THD Yellow Jackets and no one gave me a warning on their use other than to call THD who stated they will work fine. I even commented to THD support that they ran a bit hot to which they replied "it is expected because Class A runs hot".
I did not know whether you might want to make a bigger announcement suggesting they not be used in your amps! Thanks Doc.

I have a silverface Bassman head that I found in a pawn shop very, very cheap because 'it didn't work'. A quick look inside at the empty tube sockets gave me a slight hint as to why... lol. I had planned on modding it anyway.
With 6L6's it is a farily ordinary late Bassman, nothing special at all... but with a 12AY7 in the pre, the deep switch on and the Yellowjackets into an Avatar 2x12 with G12H30's it just screams...!!! I wouldn't necessarily trust it for gigging because it runs so hot but at home and in the studio it's a great alternative to my Route 66.
