any impressions? I'm leaning to the 1X12. a bit lighter and maybe at tad more bass - ? Is there a big difference in terms of brightness, bass etc.? thanks!

The pepsi challenge at Z fest came out with the 2x10 on top, just more of everything! Bass, sweet top end, mid range punch, it made me order one for myself straight away!

Interesting. this is actually my first Z amp and some people told me that I shouldn't worry - the Z's 10'' have some great bass and they don't feel like the regular 10s in most cabs.
do you think the bass depth is close enough to the 1X12?
thanks!

plus - how's the clean headroom on this one? can it hold up with a drummer and stay clean?
thanks.

Great headroom, and it will do it all.
I thought the 1x12 was wicked sweet, then when he switched to the 2x10, it gave it that extra.

I should really try mine out with my 2x10 cabinet - but with the 1x12 speaker that Z put in it it has some warmth/woodiness that seems to suit this amp well. The Jaz 20/40 can be a very bright amp with the 6V6s - so for my style of blues I like the 1x12 - I think with the 2x10s it could be too bright for my taste.

thanks for the info!
JD - could you please try the 2X10 cab and share with us? I don't want a super bright amp, my DRRI is bright enough. I wonder if there's a noticeable difference in brightness between the two speaker versions.
bluzman - thanks, could you please define this "extra"? :-)

Like what John said above, but I'd add that the bottom also had nicer punch to my ears. When you heard the demo at Z-Fest the best way to describe it without you being there would be to say that it had more presence. 6Strang or somebody that was standing with me straight across from it, help me out here!
The 12 was nice, the side by each test 2x10 was it for me.

I think you will like that combination! The Z 10s are very nice and the Jaz is one sweet amp.

I've got the 1X12. Love it. It's a pretty bright amp, so I wouldn't want it brighter.

I wonder how big the differences are with the bass, brightness etc. I've never A/B'd 1X12 and 2X10. I guess the 10's are "punchier" though.

I am generally not a 10's kinda guy, but if I was going to get this amp (which I would love to) I would be ordering the 2-10's. But also, I'd be looking to play this amp mostly clean ala "twin peaks" kinda tone, or "Buckley-esk" and I think the 10's probably suit that style better.

I don't have the Jaz I own a (Maz) but i can tell you that that the 10's (as stated above) do add more of everything. Way more bass response with the 10's than the 1x12. Much more depth to the tone.

Played a gig Friday with my jaz 20/40 1x12... I have the 2x10 thing covered with the Maz Jr and also a 2x10 cab, and I was one of the minority at Zfest that liked the 1x12 in the "pepsi challenge" ...played 'em again and ordered the 1x12... I like the warmth of it. I'm certainly no hater of the 2x10s but for lack of any better explanation the 1x12 sounded more "vintage" to me...
Fair warning about playing it next to a DRRI, my buddy had his over here and plugged up next to the JAZ the DRRI was like a toy... like a box of parts vs. a musical instrument...
Back to the gig, it was a mostly Classic country/JohnnieCashABilly/70s Southern rock sorta thing...Played my Strat all night. Mainly used a Tim and Zendrive, worked the guitar volume, and had a wonderful tone working for every style. Never touched the amp except for the reverb/vibrato switch. Nice depth and warmth. I LOVE this amp for "I don't know how big the room is in advance..." Dial it up, dial it down, just sounds RIGHT.

Great to see you here, Smitty.
You're right, the 10s have a more forward midrange (especially the lower mids) and a bolder sound.

hi! got the 2x10 tried it with a 1x12 extension closed back and still think the 2x10 in the combo is more punchy ,with tight bass and three dimensional...

I generally dont like the sonic signature of 10's. The Dr Z 2x10 cab or 2x10's in a combo just plain destroy that notion. They don't sound like 10's. They sound killer! Amazing. Nothing missing. Agree with all the praise, kudo's and tonal charaterizations I've read here. More of everything in a totally musical way.

Just an idea... if the doctor makes the same speaker with neodymium magnets then the JAZ would be so much lighter to carry around! That would be even more feasible with a solid pine cab too! (i think it 's lighter). However my JAZ is built like a tank!! LOVE the JAZ!! I m a proud owner!!
