Were you pleased with the change?
On the other end of the scale has anybody tried a Celestion G-12H and if so I'm curious if it had the bottom end slam factor of the Maz 18 jr combo? My guess is that most of that is the tone pot difference?

The 1x12 blue with a Carmen Ghia is about the most perfect amp on the face of the planet.
The only thing that may be better would be a 2x12 open back Vox blue or bulldog loaded cab!

Myles, It's funny, but I couldn't wait to plug my Ghia into my new Z 2X12" open back Celestion Blue equipped cab that I got with my Stingray head. I knew Zac's Ghia had Blues, I love the Blues, I love the Ghia, gotta be a match made in Heaven, right? Well, I found out to my shock that I don't really like the Ghia with the Blues! I much prefer the Ghia with my Z-Best. Then again, I don't really like the Ghia with my Dr. Z 2X10 cab, either, so I must just be weird.

I just stuffed my Ghia chassis in a 1x12 combo cab with a ceramic blue dog, 30 watt. I think I'm gonna like it, we'll see after I gig it tomorrow.

I love the Ghia with the Z-Best and that is my most used setup. So .... you are not weird at all .... just personal preference differences!

I like my Ghia a lot with the G12 Vintage 30, but have always dug the sound of the 1x12" blue though. My upgrade question is this: to get a 15 watt Celestion Blue or the 30 watt Weber Blue Dog. Any suggestions/recomendations/benefits to either?

I prefer the Vox blue as it's wattage rating and breakup characteristics are about as close to perfection with a Carmen Ghia as can be desired.

i gots a z best with 2 greenbacks and it is my fav cab ever! nice and neutral sounding with no frequencies really emphasized and woody and natural as well. some people say you can lose lows with greenbacks which i agree with, but the z best has so much bottom end you don't even notice......as a matter of fact i find the tone on my ghia is actually lower up with this combo, than with the stock z best speakers.

I've got one of the older WeberVST ceramic speakers made for the early Z amps, I tried a WeberVST Blue Dog, great sound, but far less headroom and more crunch to the sound, not the smooth hot singing breakup... If I'd left the blue dog in, I would need a second amp to get a non-crunchy sound... I really like the first speaker's sound, unless I needed a small amp just for playing led Zeppelin and Tom Petty type grind... the design I believe was like a higher-rated blue with ceramic, very different sound, but much more versatile in terms of headroom and flexibility.

I have a Weber BD in my Ghia with a 1x12cab, and I find it to have plenty of clean headroom and nice chime, in fact, I installed a Weber "Beamblocker" to help tone it down a bit. I have a NOS Telefunfen ECC83 in the V1, and a GE NOS 5751 in the V2. I have yet to try a 12BH7/12BH7A in the V1. Anyone know which brand is best? I see the GE 12BH7's on Ebay all the time. Is a "black plate" better? Also, the Ghia is a class A 18 watt amp, the Celestion Blue is a 15 watt speaker, wouldn't the Ghia's power be too much for the Celestion Blue? Or, is it OK to have the amp rating more the the speaker?

steveinnashville, I believe the Weber P12Z is a ceramic silverbell with a dustcover from a Weber P12N. That was the first speaker I had in my 1x12 cab that went with my Ghia, and you're right, it's very versatile, very smooth, and has very good headroom. I found that over time I started to prefer a speaker with a little more texture, but that speaker is still certainly a great match for the Ghia, and it yields a very 'deluxe on steriods' tone.
otisray, a blue is fine with the Ghia. They have a very conservative power handling rating. You could certainly blow them, but I don't think the Ghia could do it. If you cranked the Ghia to 11 and hit it hard with a boost, which isn't terribly good for the amp anyways, that might put a blue at risk.

In Weber world, the "C" would indicate ceramic, the "P" would indicated AlNiCo... The speaker I was talking about is definitely ceramic.

Maybe it's C12MZ instead of C12Z because it was early and Ted Weber knew him as "Mr. Z" ? Ted is a great guy, I've seen his shop.

Not to mention he makes GREAT speakers. I've never understood why some guys don't like him, but I guess those types of people are always out there.

I have not tried a Celestion Blue, but I replaced the standard issue V-30 with an Eminence Red Fang last week (apparently Eminences take on the C Blue). WOW! I was skeptical of Alnico speakers, but not anymore. The Ghia sounded good with the V-30, but outstanding with the Red Fang. Much clearer, punchier, touch sensative,.....

I get so confused with the Eminence names. I would never have guessed that the Red Fang was blueish.
