I >:(WAS the winning bidder on the eBay auction 320076026165 which was of a January 99 Route 66. (I thought once a bid was placed, the item had to sell, anyway...) The description mentioned "the original Dixie transformers and the external 5V filament unit for the rectifier tube" Can anyone comment on these aspects of the amp? Also, the amp was using a 5U4 rectifier. Is that the correct tube? I know the GZ34 and 5AR4 are interchangeable as I am a Mazerati owner. Was I bidding on an amp that might have had the transformer stressed?

Hi, I’m the person who bought the amp. I’m certainly not trying to gloat or make you feel bad because I too have lost on auctions. I know it’s seems pretty unfair but auctions can be canceled at anytime. This is allowed because people who sell on EBay often also have actual storefront shops and are simultaneously selling that item in their store. The amp originally had a “Buy it Now” price of $1199.00 which disappeared when the first bid went up. The last bid that I saw posted I think was $899.00. I wrote the seller and ask if he had a “But it now” he explained he did. $1199.00 seemed like a good price so I bought it. From my experience if there is something you really want it’s always best to just write the seller and ask what they’ll take for it. Anyway, I’m sorry if you lost out I can assure you I didn’t want to hurt anyone with my purchase. About the different rectifier this is what the seller wrote me (by the way, he was a very nice extremely knowledgeable man) “normally I'd be watchful of using a 5U4 in an amp designed for a 5AR4, since the 5U4 draws more filament current. But the early 66s didn't have a 5V filament winding on their power transformer, they used a separate filament transformer for the rectifier tube and it is clearly marked '3 amp' ”. If you have any more knowledge on the matter your input would be greatly appreciated. ROCK ON BROTER!

Fender used to spec a 5U4 on some amps and 5AR4 on others even though they used the same power transformer!

Well I am certainly glad someone on the forum got the amp. I certainly would also have paid the $1199 of the original BIN price. I have seen Routes go for $850-$950 on eBay so I can certainly get one some other time.
I was more thrown because it seems that I should put my gear for sale on eBay without a reserve and always reserve the right to pull the auction right before the close date if I don't think I am going to get the price I want. This violates the true nature of an auction.
It also seems strange that just because a bid is placed for the BIN price to disappear. Why should it disappear if this can happen.
Anyway, that's really another issue.
Anyway, I'll get a Route someday. Enjoy yours and keep playing.
Erik

Hi Erik, I TOTALLY AGREE. I really don't understand why you get charged to put a Buy it Now price that disappears when some clown who really doesn't intend to buy put's a $1.00 bid on. Also, what’s the point in bidding on something when the seller can yank anytime they want? Anyway, if I ever see another Route 66 up for auction anywhere I’ll write you here in the forum to give you a heads-up.

I had a similar experince, except I was the buyer. The Firebird in my signature was bought on eBay about a year and a few months ago. There was a BIN, but instead I opted to bid normally, and the BIN went away. The next day I emailed the seller and got his phone # and we talked (he was very nice). I asked if I could get the guitar for the BIN price and he agreed (he said the BIN wasn't supposed to disappear).
What ended up happening was I sent him the money and he kept the auction running until he recieved it and cancelled the auction. By the time he did cancel it the bid was $500 higher than what I payed for it with a full day left! He still honored our deal and I have the guitar and it's great. I'm sure someone was upset about that though!

BIN disappears as soon as there is one bid on auctions with no reserve. It stays on with a reserve auction until the reserve is met. It's pretty clearly described in the auction listing details. The problem is, you can't start an auction at 1$ with no reserve and a buy it now because someone will always bid on it. You have to have a high enough starting bid to discourage the tire-kickers, otherwise use a reserve price to keep that BIN up there long enough to get some exposure.
