A used Route 66 head is available in a local store...i have it on hold til tomorrow....I have a Z 28 that I love...for some reason I want a Route 66 as well. It is blonde, it has a P serial number...it's about 1100 USD...seems to be excellent shape...I SURE do not need this thing...so can any of you talk sense to me?? Anything I should be wary of? ? Thanks!!

I was in exactly the same situation, had an amp I really like but then played the Route 66 in a store for 5 min and loved it. Spent the next few days convincing myself I don't need it. Didn't help ... ran back to the store and bought it. Love it.

The 66 would be a great compliment to the Z 28 with it's thicker sound. Got the same EF 86 and is great with pedals. Some people have mentioned before how great these two amps would sound in stereo. I keep thinking about adding a Z28. Just do it. You can always sell it if it is not what you like. BTW, don't expect anyone on this forum to discourage you from buying more Z amps!

At the risk of being a downer, I would say don't do it. I know they have their differences, but there are a LOT of similarities. They're both EF86 driven with two 'big bottle' power tubes. They both have volume, bass & treble. Yes, the 66 is going to sound thicker, but it's also going to be louder. The power sections are both class A/B
Without everyone in the forum jumping all over me, I think you'd be better off getting a different Z amp than the 66. (or get the 66 and sell the Z28) Just too much overlap. Sort of like getting a Maz Jr and a Ghia. Yes, I know there are going to be differences in these two amps, but they're both 12ax7 driven....cathode biased... 18 watt... el84 amps.
I own a Route 66 and a Maz Jr. I figure those are far apart in tone to justify owning two Z amps.
Also, I see 66's regularly go for less than $1100 USD on Ebay. Usually around $850-$950.

I was in the same predicament about two weeks ago. I own a Maz 38sr w/verb head. I took a trip to Boston Guitar Works to see a BadCat they had for sale. Well, I didn't buy the Cat but walked out of the place with a Route 66 head and haven't regretted it once ever since. A Route 66 will never be a bad purchase - go for it - you'll fall instantly in love as I did. I love both of my heads now!!!
Good luck, BilBal

For some reason? How about that it's the best amps I have played through since 1965. Maybe the best amp ever, I can't remember exactely what that old Marshall sounded like but I am pretty sure I like the 66's better. I know I like the 66 clean tone better. You have to use an Airbrake or get in a room where you can put the Volume up to 1 o'clock. Listen to those clips of the Howlers on the 66 page. I am getting the same sound with a single coil Strat with no effects. When go into my Hendrixy set I throw on the BB and I'm in Redhouse Heaven. Mine had a break in period, it's actually warmer and a little more open sounding now than when I first got it. I have run the same tubes for almost three years. It has never need service and I totally abuse it. I can't think of a time when I was happier with a gear purchase. I actually want to be selfish and tell people not to get it because I don't want them to sound as good as me but your not local so GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you still have any doubts go back to the store and don't play riffs or funky things or wild leads through the amp. Just hit a couple of whole note chords and really listen to the note separation and the chimmy tone, ( Vox like natuaral reverb) and the tightness of the bass. Then go do the same thing through any other amp in the store. If you do that and you really listen, I bet you'll buy the 66.
