I have just mentioned this a bit in the favorite amp discussion in the general forum, but... How do these two amps compare. Dr. Z sort of made the Mazerati to be a louder version of the Ghia is what I understand. But how do they compare in volume, breakup, and tone? I got my Mazerati without hearing a Ghia, and wish I had compared the two. I simply feel that I have too much power with the rati, I like to play clean, but want more tube saturation quite often. Will an airbrake get me Ghia like tones without going deaf? Mazerati shakes the house too much, no cops yet but there is reason for concern.

Well the ghia does have much less headroom. Yesterday the neighbours went out so my dad (a bass player) and i decided to have a loud jam. The amp was on full volume at times, and in a medium sized room and though it was very loud i could put up with it. I dunno, i'm probably gonna get tinnitus or whatever someday. The tone was something else. Just out of this world amazing, i could not believe the sound was so good (well maybe it should be after spending a grand on it, but anyway...). What was so good was that i could turn it down to 10 o'clock and it would be clean, but you could still hear it as it was just bass and guitar, though that might be difficult with a nine-piece! I played both the mazerati and the ghia in the store, both combos, the ghia a 2x10 and mazerati 1x12. I actually much prefered the sound of the ghia, and i'm not just saying that because i got the ghia. (Vice-versa in fact- i got the ghia because it sounded better to me.)They were very similar in sound, so if you get the ghia don't expect for an immediate change. Maybe it was because i could wind up the ghia to a good clean sound (the best clean sounds on the ghia are 10-11 O'clock i find, with just a little hair on them) whereas the mazerati was very loud at this point, so i tended to turn it down a bit. But still, i prefered the ghia, so it must of been something. Personal preference. I'd suggest you try a ghia if it's not too much of a hike. Sorry if you knew/expected all this. Nick

I wouldn't worry too much about tinnitus with a Ghia. Old guys like me that cranked non- master Marshalls and Fenders for years have it and it is unpleasant. It's also a result of lots of other things, hammers driving nails, running saws, driving down the road with the windows open and the worst offenders - LOUD DRUMMERS! Lots of people that were never exposed to this stuff also get it for different reasons.

I love both thats why I have both the cleans on the rati are a thang of beauty great for country jazz or whatever your clean requirements maybe the ghia is also great and excells at the small club blues rock sound .set the volume on about 11.00 to 1.00 and ride your volume and touch for all kinds of clean and grit and inbewtween the cleans on the rati sound thicker to me chewier and well ...bigger with all that and cant stop playing the ghia lately its a great amp and in most the clubs I play I can get the volume past 12.00 it sits really nice in the mix to lately I've been doing a jam night and letting other guitar players play thru my rig well I walk to the back of the room it really occupies the right frequencies and cuts thru really thick and balanced I'm in love!! I go play now

Thanks guys. I sort of knew they were similar, but wasn't sure about the volume differences. So, would an airbrake lower my volume and get me more grit and ghia like tones. Don't get me wrong, I just love this Mazerati. I will never get rid of it. I could be homeless, toothless, and bandless and I would still carry this 50 pound tone monster around just to get to hear it. Is tone more important than a home, maybe. LOL If I had my way I would not hesitate to get all the Z's, but alas I must make due with what I really need. If the Ghia and the Mazerati are very close in tone, I might just get an airbrake and or a Mini. If I start playing out maybe I will reconsider a Ghia or other Z amps. Thanks alot guys.

I'd recommend the Airbrake for your needs. It will knock down the volume - and you'll find that you'll be able to raise it up when you need to when you eventually play out.
Hope this helps.
