I've read that KT66 tubes can be used in amps using 6L6 tubes to "get a more British Sound". Is this really true? Is the reverse the case? i.e. will a Route 66 be able to use 6L6 tubes?
Also are the EL34,6L6,6V6,KT66,KT88,KT77 all the same pin configuration?

When the Groove Tube KT66s came out I ordered a pair to try in my '57 Bassman. I had converted this amp to cathode bias so it was almost a plug and play thing except the base on the KT66s was too big for the clamp jaws and I had to take them off first. The KT66s had a thicker mid range and beefier sound but I preferred the 5881s so I put them back in.

Even if it could, I wouldn't.

Ive been running for a long time, Kt66's in my 65' Vibrolux reverb. To be honest, i do switch occasionaly back to a set of GE's for more of the glassy, woody, sound, ... but i love the KT's in there !! The black face era amps have that famous mid notch, and i like the way the thicker sounding 66's work in it. They're also a little easier on the top end than the 6l6's. BUT, ..... it's still all fender, just a different flavor. You do need to be careful tho, they draw more current some where internaly, than do the 6l6's ( cant remember exactly, ask myles perhaps ) and if your amp is say older and happens to run closer to the limit on your transformer, you could have a bad day. Other than that, it's just a bias job to swap into a set.
As far as 6l6's in the Rt.66, ........ well, the doc basically designed that amp around that tube and its probably not gonna be improved upon (?)

You do need to be careful tho, they draw more current some where internaly, than do the 6l6's Higher filament current. KT66: 1.3A 6L6: 0.9A Personally I would not run 6L6 in Route 66 since the amp has been designed around the KT66 and with ultra-linear application in mind, where these tubes shine.
