I tried a route 66, used looks new, the music store is asking 1,098 . they are about 1,540 brand new. It seems kind of high to me for a used head. I guess ebay is the other option, but I was thinking of making a offer on it for$900. Anybody have any ideas? thanks.

From the standpoint of retail (physical brick-n-mortar location), that's pretty good. 30% off new would be $1078. I'm sure you could negotiate something with them - particularly if you have cash in hand (especially $1098 out the door - discount by the tax amount). Can't hurt to offer $900 - might get a heck of a deal.
Ebay, they go for $1000 regularly - plus shipping and service charges as applicable. Plus you have the potential for something to 'happen' in transit (retail, you just walk out the door with it). You can find completed listings anywhere from $850-1200.
If I recall, $1050 was the ballpark for the minty R66 I purchased on eBay 3 years ago...plus shipping.

Hi I have a blonde 66....bought it about a year ago...its in mint condition and it cost me $1050, So the one you're talking about looks pretty good value..considering the shop will have to stand over it...still you might as well haggle a bit....he's got what you want you've got what andhe wants. Good luck !

Thanks for the info everyone, this 66 head is black salt & pepper. I failed to look at the sr# in back to check on the exact year it was made. I want that amp now ,but they are closed on sunday. I really love that fat sound, makes a strat sound huge. Also, my credit card is almost maxed out from the maz 18. I plan to depending on the gig use the maz 18 combo as the speaker cab with the head on top (g12h). Hope this set up will be okay. My old 4x12 greenback cab is just a pain to move around, although I can't wait to try it.

It seems that $1050.00 to $1100.00 has been the used price for quite a while....probably since Doc's new prices have been stable for so long as well. Mark

Thanks for the info, I checked the sr# it was J, so I assume it was made in 1999. Grove tubes are #4's ,they look new. I traded a 1992 combo and $700 beans. nice tone. I wanted this to be my main amp for gigs, however I just found out the gtkt66 tubes are hard to find. I think this head sat in someones house for years, these tube could be old. Hope these tubes last longer than el34's.
