;D
I recently had the chance to pick up a RT66 from The Gear Page about a month ago. I finally found the tone that I was looking for.
My RT66 is currently bias a little hot with Chinese KT66's. The GT's tubes that were in the amp were great, but a friend of mind told me that the Chinese KT66 sound amazing if biased correctly.
After retubing my amp, we plugged into a Swanson 1X12 cab loaded with an Emi Wizard, and a G&L Semi Hollow Bluesboy guitar. About 1 hour later we were both amazing at the tone and feel of the amp.
This amp is just plain fun. I now spend less time toe tapping on various pedals, and more time adjusting the volume on my guitar. I can go from Country to Rock to Indie by adjust my volume or tone and my level of attack.
This amp wants to be cranked, but still sounds amazing at lower levels with a few pedals in front.
Lastly, I didn't really understand what people meant by saying "this amp loves pedals" until I actually sat down with this amp and my pedals. Every pedal I used with the Rt66 produced a very pleasing and rich tone. Delay, OD, Fuzz, even a Wah. Every single pedal we threw at the amp, it devoured.
Not to sound too pedal snobbish, the best sounding pedal we used was my friend's Klon. The Klon seemed to bring out that extra something within the RT66 that the other boosts tried. I do not own a Klon, and I am not planning to buy one. I do have a bad feeling that the RT66 + Klon tone is going to haunt me now.
My friend/amp tech has owned hundreds of amps (Komet, Suhr, D13, Bogner, Marshall, Fender, you name it, etc) and he found that the RT66 is one of the best amps out there. He once owned a Rt66 and sold it to buy another amp, but always regretting selling it...
All this to say...
Thanks Dr. Z for making such a simple yet amazing amp. The workmanship is top notch, and the tone is exactly what I was looking for.
