I do minor amp repairs and am working on building a class A amp right now, but I admit not looking in the back of my route 66. I've never even taken the back off to check the tubes. It works and sounds perfect, so I've never really payed attention to what's going on back there. I consider it akin to voodoo and not to be messed with by fiddlers like myself. Because of you guys (really, that's who I blame when my wife asks about these tubes showing up at the door) I've gotten bitten by the premium tubes in an amp that already sounds awesome bug. So I've been trying to figure out what I have to order and I looked in the back of the amp today. I see 1. EF86, 1. 12AX7, 2. KT66, 1. 5AR4. When I look on the good Doc's site under 'tube info' it says: Route 66: 1- EF-86 ,1- GT 12AX7 R2,1-Pair GT KT-66-HP , 1- 5AR41-GT 12AX7 S, 1- 5751,1-Quad GT EL-84-S, 1- 5AR4
So naturally I was confused.
I've got an amperex bugle boy EF86 coming, so I guess all I need is a matched 12AX7 as the PI and a better rectifier. I'm thinking the JJ GZ34 is the one to go with on kcanostubes since it's affordable. Anyone have any caveats on this?
Thank you. Or thanks y'all, as we say out here in MO.

That tube list is a misprint, I think the Mazerati tube info got pasted on to the end
Ef86-12ax7-2Kt66-5ar4/GZ34 I like the SovtekLPS in the PI that was stock. I'd go with an NOS rectifier if you can afford it just for reliability and performance.

Well, being as its almost Christmas a NOS rectifier probably won't be happening. They're blingtastically expensive. Maybe next year. You think the JJ rectifier will be better than the sovtek that's in there? I'm on the order page with the submit button waiting... anyone got an opinion about the JJ rectifiers?

Might be a good question for Mike from KCA or Myles. I wouldn't know but I would guess there wouldn't be much difference between the JJ and Sovtek. But I could be totally wrong. I just know the good NOS rectifiers basically last forever and I like that peace of mind when playing out.

Yeah I hope he has some of those mislabeled ones after the new year. Mike said the JJ would be an upgrade but I don't know if it'll be the kind of difference everyone is reporting on those mislabeled jan phillips.

Yeah I hope he has some of those mislabeled ones after the new year. Mike said the JJ would be an upgrade but I don't know if it'll be the kind of difference everyone is reporting on those mislabeled jan phillips. It won't ... JJ is a step up from the Sovtek but not by much. I have tried all three rectos in the Route 66 (stock Sovtek, JJ and the mislabeled JAN Phillips) and the NOS wins hands down, so much in fact that I could not resist and did some major damage to my credit card (also risking divorce) and ordered the NOS Valvo 5AR4 to try in the Route 66, it's supposed to be even better and closer performance wise, to the "Holy Grail" Mullard. The JAN Phillips will go into my other amp. Before ever buying a single NOS tube I was a bit sceptical but I'm fully converted now ... unless a person is completely tone deaf, he/she will hear the difference. IT IS that drastic! It's a different issue if somebody does not care enough or does not think that for the premium cost of NOS tubes the improvement in sound is worth it, each to their own ... but they simply do not make them tubes like they used to. Since it's a tube amplification device, it's only logical that tubes will contribute most to the overall sound.

You are the devil. I am going to have to work overtime now. You're really going to think I'm the devil when I tell you that I just put a balanced NOS GE 12AX7 in the phase inverter slot of the Route 66 and it sounds fantastic! Quieter then the stock Sovtek and much richer cleans and thicker overdrive. Check it out here: www.kcanostubes.com/content/estore_details.asp?category=57&product=37I have a NOS GEC EF86 in there as well, which sounds awesome, even nicer then the Dario Miniwatt which is a very nice tube, but the GEC just adds more of everything, got it from Mike, where else? I also put a NOS Valvo 5AR4 and it's a bit nicer then the JAN Phillips recto, not by much but seems to make the amp a bit tighter. Life is good when tone is good! ;D

By the way, my rectifier is one of my prized possesions. A 1954 Steel based Mullard GZ34
