So today I went to the local music store to try out some amps i've had my eye on. I already have a Maz. 18 Jr. which I love. I am now looking for a hard rock amp. From what I read, the Route 66 seemed to me to be good for those classic rock sounds, but not so much for the heavier 80's rock stuff. First up was a JCM 800 reissue, which sounded pretty damn good (2k bucks though). Next was a 1959 hand wired marshall head (which just about tore my ear drums to pieces, and it was only on around 4 on the volume). After that, I saw a Route 66 head on top of a Dr. Z 2X12 cab. I figured "why not". Well I turned that thing up past noon, and wow! This thing can get some pretty high gain sounds if you push it! I was easily getting early van halen tones through a humbucker equipped guitar. I was sold on the JCM, but now I may have to reconsider. Especially since the 66 is almost 500 bucks cheaper. Anyone else on here using this amp for those kind of 80's rock sounds, and if so how are you getting them without turning the volume to almost full? Pedals, attenuator?

You may want to get an attenuator. A couple that have high ratings are the Airbrake (of course) the THD Hotplate and the Weber Mass.
From my own experience, do not get a Marshall Powerbrake. Yuck.
For pushing the Route 66, most people keep all three knobs on 3:00. Remember, with this amp, adjusting the bass and treble will not only adjust the treble and bass, but when either one is increased passed 12:00, it also increases the gain of that frequency.
You'll probably need a pedal or two. I like the Fulldrive II.
But there are lots of good ones out there...I'm sure people will offer their opinions/favorites.

Yes, Try a pedal through it. It loves pedals. I have run an FD2 in Boost mode plus an OCD with a wah first of course and the 66 just ate it up. This situation could cause a newer Fender amp to explode, just kidding but you know what I mean. Sonically not kidding. I use a BB Booster from Xotic effects and it's great. The SRZ-65 has been labled as the "best JCM 800 ever" by Myles and others. It's also still less than the Marshall, with a tube rec and more responsive tone controls and MV.
