What's the collective experience here for putting the Route 66 into a couple of Alnico Blues? I figure the chime and sparkle from the Blues might be a cool pairing with the smoky 66 - kind of a yin-yang thing...and a nice and loud 2x12" rig!

I'm very happy with a 66 and two 1 x 12 closed back cabs, each with a 16 ohm Celestion Alnico Blue. At relatively low volume gigs, I use a single 12 cab -- but either way I use an Airbrake.

How would you contrast the sound out of the Blues with other cabs/speakers? Any particular characteristics or qualities that the Blues seem to draw out?

I use two open back 12's with a Blue and a G12H30. They sound great together as the G12 seems to drive a little more low end and the Blue has that brighter crisper sound.

I'm selling off my old rack at the moment but I've decided to keep an old open back 1-12 to try the new Celestion Gold in it. I've never had an alnico so it'll be a first. Heaven knows what one will cost down here but I know the dealer really well so.... Might be interesting with the 66

my Marshall 2x12 w/ closed back w/ weber blue dog alnico and G12H30 reconed w/ paper cones by George alessandro sounds great with the 66. I know a lot of people like this combo in open backed cabs, and I am sure that I will too, but in a closed back 2x12 it is nice. The weber brings the Route 66 some chime and the G12H30 some sweet low end that is tight, but not quite as tight as a Zbest cab can be. Anyway, nice combo, ESPECIALLY with a 335 and maybe a teeny OD or boost thrown in...

I did a speaker swap yesterday.
Usually run the R66 with a G12H/V30 setup - great, balanced tones, but with some sizzle/edge and tight bass. I plugged the R66 into a WEber Alnico Blue/Silver (30watt) 212 and experienced the smoothest, beautifully compressed, balanced blues tones I've ever heard. No pedals, just guitar/amp. Wonderful. Very "one-trick-pony" setup, but amazing if that suited the musical needs. Would think the G12H/Blue combo would sound great - a little of both worlds.

Dan, was that an open or closed back? I would probably have to go with a gold or Weber. I reckon I'd blow a blue at some of the volumes I play.

Was a standard Avatar 212 open - basically, the small hole in the center of the back pannel. Those cabinets are SUCH a great deal - pricing and tone! I've had mine on the road since 2003 and it's been flawless. Yes, I'd go with a Weber Alnico Blue as well - get a 30 watter.

depending on the guitar choice, my experience is that the "alnico" can sound a little dark or less bright than I'd like with the 66..................I absolutely love it with a tele-strat at ALL volumes........with a humbucker..........I much prefer the low end "punch" of ceramic and the high end clarity that my silverbell supplies......... I really love owning both, but, if I had to pick one,....hands down it would be ceramic silver bell for my rt66.............works for all guitars at all volumes... I was once in line for a celestion gold, but, got tired of waiting........I went the Weber route instead and am VERY happy........maybe the gold sounds even better? ?? Love my weber's though.............................Thanks JChance for pointing down the weber road.
