Speakers, tubes and bias point all have an amazing affect on the tone of the Route 66, experiment with these as they are much cheaper than a new amp. That said, ALL other Z's have more top end and most have less bass, perhaps your an EL-84 man, have you tried the MAZ's? Curt

my tubes are GT #7 biased at around 37 (which was as low as it can go). I have not tried any other of Z's amps. That's odd??? I have dropped mine as low as 26 and it will go lower. Doc tuned mine up and sent it back @ 32, lot's of guy's like 34/36. What rec are you running? perhaps that is sending too much current? What is the plate voltage?

I biased my 66 at 34-36 & it sounds very good at that setting. I'm running a 1x12 loaded with a Weber Silver Bell Ceramic 50w speaker in it.

plate voltage is 470/435. With the trimmer set all the way clockwise the bias reads 39/32 (tubes seem to have drifted away apart there??). I as i turn it CC it gets really high, i don't know how high because once it gets to 50 i start backing off to not hurt the tubes. These are GT HP #7 and only about a month old. hope that helps corey If youre getting that wide of a spread I think GT would replace them under warranty...thats not a good match.

Yeah, definately sounds like the tubes. I had an early set of the first run kt66's that ran away on me, became un-matched. And a set of EH 6V6's that drifted so hot i couldnt getem below like 40 something ma!!! Yikes, they were red plating. So somethings wrong there. For brighter sound out of the route as was said you can get a lot of change from the tube choices EF86 and the 66's. The # 7's will resist compressing longer than say #5's, and therefore not clip some of the waveform off the high end, but if your in the habit of running the volume high, it's still going to happen, just further on the knob travel. I'd try a set of the shuaguang kt's. Biased low they are reported to be quite a bit brighter, but you may loose just a bit of the touch compression with those tubes biased low. I'm going to try some myself eventually, But i currently happy with a set of NOS grey glass GEC's (nice, but big $$ )
