I hadn't played my Route 66 in about 6 weeks. Playing almost every day with my Maz Jr. instead. (with a twangin' tele)
I had really considered one of the limited run SRZ-65's. But I figure I have a 66 and that will get me close.
But after 6 weeks with a twanging tele, I felt the need for some bluesy rock and roll. So I cranked up the Route 66 with a 335. Everything on 3:00
Wow! Man, I don't need no stinkin' SRZ-65. I don't remember this much crunch or the spongy feeling when hitting a chord or a wound string. For the first time ever, I turned the volume knob down for a little more clarity and attack. Didn't last long...I turned it back up to 3:00
I also noticed how it likes pedals better than the MAZ. Not that the Maz is bad, but the ef86 of the 66 seems to handle it with more clarity.

I can't seem to decide which Z to add to complement the sounds I get from the 66. Looking for a lower watt Z. I believe Curt had mentioned the connection between the Ghia and 66, with the 66 sounding bigger, fatter, etc. It made me think that the basic tone was fairly similar. Since you have a Maz Jr and a 66, do you feel that it would be a better complement to the 66 than the Ghia. Play mostly strats and teles and adding a Z with reverb may give me the excuse I need to sell my Fender reverb amps. Thanks. John

Well I don't have a Ghia so I don't know if I can answer your question to the degree you may be looking for.
But I did A/B them. Not with a footswitch, but I had to switch both the cable and the attenuator. Takes about 30 seconds.
I have found that I really don't like the Maz Jr with humbucker pickups. That glassy chime (for lack of a better term) just sort of gets on my nerves. But when played with single coils, it's fine.
I think the Route 66 is more transparent than the Maz Jr. What I mean by that, is the 66 lets more of the original sound of the guitar through.
As for a compliment. Are you talking about A/B'ing them in a live gig situation? I don't ever do that. If you are talking about just having two different amps to choose from (to be the single amp of the evening)....then yes, I'd say having a 66 and a Maz covers a wide spectrum. Can't say that a Ghia wouldn't do the same thing....never played one.
I hope that helps.

LOL I feel that the Ghia and the 66 very much share the simple circuit Dr Z vibe, Guit3 is right on the the 66 (and the Ghia) lets the guitar come through, that, IMO, is the result of those simple yet AWESOME Mike Zaite circuits. IMO a Ghia and a 66 for low volume small gigs/Higher volume larger gigs and your covered tonally. thanks for listenin' ;^) Curt

When I put everything on 3 I'm able to rock even with strat and tele. Obviously takin' down 2-3 points with air brake to safe my eares

Gtrman3, thanks for the response. Interesting comment about humbuckers with the Maz since I have a LP that I like to play as well. Curt, everyone listens to you!! As we all know, the 66 is a great amp, but needs to be played loud. I use an airbrake, which works really well, but for practicing and home use, I may be better off with an 18 watter. The Ghia may be the answer. Thanks again. John

The Ghia WOULD be awesome, but just for tonal contrast and variety, i think i'd opt for a Maz 18. You could blend the brighter fendery tones with the burnished tawny tones of the 66 (my Fave!), as well as have an amp with lower watt capabilities, AND the versatility you get with a Maz! Kinda two or three amps for the price of one!
