Because Fender type amps always work well with TS9 tube screamer type pedals..... and Marshall amps are known for working well with Fuzz type pedals. The Route 66 being a clone of the Fender bassman but still being a Marhall as well...... Does it work and adapt well with fuzz pedals? If, so what fuzz pedals did you find are working well with the 66. I use humbucker guitars as well to help in my tone quest.

The Route 66 is the best Fuzz amp I've played/owned.
For the record I can make a Fender sound great with a fuzz pedal

Speaking of fuzz... the Fulltone 69 really impressed me. But I realized that I'm more of a light OD kinda guy than a fuzz kinda guy.

I'm using a Brontoboost(Si/Ge 2 channel fuzz booster) and a Hellbilly.
I'd love to pick up a Fulltone '69. Great low gain Fuzz

When it comes to fuzz pedals I have not tried many that is why ask. I love the 66 so much I just want a little something that adds just a touch of grit.

No, Fuzz pedals at the moment. Have tried the keeley fuzz..... but that was along time ago. There are many fuzz pedals out there. The 66 will like anythinhg you use through it. Do you have a fuzz now? What have you tried.

IMO the 66 has great low end response. When using my TS808 (early 80s) the low end punch dropped and was too midrangy. The 66 has such a nice midrange tone to start with that the TS808 didn't appeal to me with the 66. I do like the xotic BB pedal becuase it has seperate bass and treble controls which I can tweak to my liking. The only other OD/Dist pedals I've tried with the 66 are the Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive and a Proco Rat. Both sound great!

In my experience all depends first on guitar, then on other things like kind of music, sound in your head ecc. I think open OD like OCD and TS808 sound better with humbuckers, others with more midrange like Rat (even Keeley mode) or Fulltone D Pro are great with single coil. These are general start point, but there are so many details that all can be wright and wrong at the same time.
For example attack and trebles depend also by picking hard or sweet, think that hands and brain can do much than every stomp box ...
However, I think that this amp has a great basic sound, and the logical consequence is that it love pedals too, even fuzzes or OD or boost or comp.

The 66 LOVES fuzz. I think it's such a vintage sounding amp that the fuzz face clones just sound so authentic. I'm still looking for a good fuzz. I have a Hellbilly which is great but it's more of a germanium boost than a pure fuzz. Tried a friends Zvex Fuzz Factory one night and that sounded awesome, but I've yet to try an original or vintage fuzz through it. Looking at the MI Neo or I'll get Dave Ulbrick to make me one.

You don't have the same Hellbilly that I do. Mine is a full Si that Bob tweaked to have a ton of gain. More ballsy than a McFuzz for sure.

Laroosco, that would be cool. I love my Hellbilly. It does all my fuzz duties at the moment plus my more aggressive overdrive needs. When I borrowed my friends Fuzz Factory I was A/B ing it with the Hellbilly in the middle of a song (gotta keep myself entertained!) and when it came time for the solo I accidently had both on and had this hellatious high gain fuzz tone that I loved. So I'm kinda wanting another fuzz to slam with the hellbilly for those outta control over the top fuzz leadsl I actually used to the two together later that night for my Van Halen lead tone...

Here's a Custom Hybrid Fuzz that Joe Gagan of Nine Volt Nirvana built me. It kicks arse as well The ugly thing on the left is the volume knob.

Cool, but I need something in a small package for the board? Are all fuzz pedals close or similar tone wise?

Post by taswegian on Sept 11, 2006 21:16:23 GMT -7
I'd almost say none are similiar tone wise, the same pedal can even sound different at different temperatures if it's a germanium based one. There are so many variables you really need to try them to see how it works with all of those variables. The Route 66 is a very "forgiving" amp with fuzzes though. I haven't heard one that didn't sound good, it's just a personal preference and also the feel and response you wanna get out of it.

Analog Man Sunface is supposed to be a good one
Fulltone '69 and 70 are cool flavors of differnt vintage Fuzz Face tones. The Soulbender is a cool pedals too
Retroman makes some cool stuff, but I can't remember the name of his
McFuzz and McFuzz Hot. Both VERY cool pedals as well. These aren't made anymore but you can score them for good prices on eBay if you look.
MJM London. These are badass pedals. I've got my eye on a London II(Si)

Thanks all..... For budget reasons could somebody tell me the difference between the London Fuzz and 69? I like the clips of the 69 and don't want a over the top sounding fuzz. Just something that adds a nice overtone to my leads.

Very cool tones no doubt. What transistor is more touchy to temperature change.... the Geranium or SI transistor?

Zman, the germanium is temp sensative unless tweaked by design of the circuit. some of the builders out there do this to get more stability out of the germ units. Some have the bias knob so you can tweak it manually to correct for the goofy variations from stage temps. The silicon based designs are exempt from the temp issues. A few of my faves are very close, IMHO, to a "good" original face ( which had horrible spec-ing of parts ) They are : MJM London- awesome! maybe the closest to the real thing, total Jimi at montery !! .... Foxrox fuzz foot- another very close to original with an external bias control to adjust for taste and temps, ..... and a different beast alltogether, but awesome is the Lovepedal Karl fuzz,- not a clone at all, but maybe the most usable fuzz ive tried. its almost like a distortion that morphs into a serious fuzz at higher settings, and it does not roll off the highs so severely with your guit volume up full, like all fuzz face clones do ( some people like that coagulating thick treble roll off tho). To my ears the MJM, like all of his pedals, is the most authentic sounding, the good with the bad, .. he just seems to source and match the components so well that its like you got a really really good oldie! if ya like the EJ thing shoot for the silicon's theyre brighter, gainy-er, maybe a little brittle compared to the germs, but really explosive!! more like Jimi band of gypsy's era.

Yes, ... imagine if you were to find the best of the best original Big muff's, not the later ones and certainly not the re-issues, and yould have the foxey. I just dont work a fuzz into my sound. I would have kept it but i dont do a pedal board thing either and cant justify keeping all these cool pedals. I did keep an early london just so i have the closest thing (imo) to a real fuzz face, ... for a rainy day.
Everything he makes is like an outstanding example of an original. Ive got his 60's vibe up for sale now on the sale post's ( i know i'm gonna regret this one). I have an original Uni-vibe, and the MJM is amazing! So close its scary.

Try a MJM London Fuzz. A great fuzz face clone. Cleanes up great, I find awsome clean tones as well as killer fuzz tones with this pedal. I also have a Fulltone Soul Bender, but I still like the MJM London better!
