I skipped out of work early today & took a ride down to my local boutique gear dealer to try out some pedals that I've been interested in. As usual I took a look at the amps & they had a brand new 66. I tried it out & man-oh-man the 66 is one GREAT sounding amp! I couldn't believe how much the tone controls could alter the gain of the amp. Touch sensitivity was amazing & the amp cleaned up real nice with my guit-fiddles volume control. The 66 has such an open, organic tone that it left me speechless. My favorite setting was all knobs at 3 O'clock. Instead of buying the pedals that I originally went in for I ended up buying the 66! Now I see what all the buzz is about with this amp. I read somewhere that Z believes the 66 is the amp that he will be remembered for & I completely agree with him. The 66 is truly an amazing amp. Kudos to you Mike for such a great sounding amp. Not too shabby for a drummer

Didn't break any windows. The store is a small place that caters to the boutique gear buyer so they understand that in order to know what the amp is going to sound like you need to try it out at gig volumes.
I may need to invest in an Airbrake for some of the smaller gigs we play. I'll cross that bridge when & if I need to.

Yeah Prowler! I recorded my whole album with all knobs on 3:00. Just moved the guitar volume knob for the appropriate amount of dirt or clean. It's a great way to run the amp if you can get away with it. That's pretty loud with the Zbest...still haven't found a 1-12 I'm happy with but I've got my eye on one to try. For gigs I've been running at 12:00 (no airbrake) which is a slight compromise but still sounds fantastic. I kick in the fatboost if I need more dirt. I like that setting a bit more than higher settings with airbrake. Cleans up beautifully and it's so big it sounds like you have more "crunch" than you actually do. Although I was just asked to do a rock gig next weekend and I don't see a clean sound on the whole set list so I might have to crank it up with the airbrake for that one. Nice one and happy playing....gotta love the big bottle tone!

I should have mentioned that my 66 with all of the knobs set at 3 o'clock is running into my custom made 1x12 loaded with a Weber Silver Bell, 50 watt, medium dope speaker. Thats most likely why I am able to run the 66 with the knobs in that position and not completely blow the roof off the joint.

I can beat that. RxES in a music store; played into a Z-Best; volume at three o'clock; Overdose engaged. I've got one of the first Route 66's (actually an "Interstate 66" with the incorrect faceplate) and a Stingray with Blues and it made both of those seem as quiet as a Smoky amp. Sounded like God, though.

Corey, The Route 66 came out in 1999. I had heard from Perry Roper that Dr.Z was designing an amp with KT-66's and called up and put a deposit down on one immediately. Needless to say I was blown away when I got it!
I didn't even realize until last January that my 66 had the wrong symbol on the faceplate! I was at a guitar show and a guy had "Route 66 head #5". I told him that I had an early one too and he commented on the "Interstate" faceplate. I immediately went home and looked at mine, and sure enough it was just like his! He said that he thought that only a few got out with the "interstate" faceplate. Maybe someone with a 2000 or 2001 66 can check in on this.

I have an '03 and and '05 and they both have the new Route symbol FWIW. That #5 was on here and ebay a few weeks ago. I've also heard those early ones had a different tranny.

So THATS what looks weird to me on some 66 amps! Every now & then when I see pics of older 66's there seemed to be something weird about them that I couldn't put my finger on.

After having my 66 for about a week now & being able to play it for two rehearsals & two shows I can honestly say this amp is one of the best amps I've ever owned. So responsive to picking dynamics & very open sounding. My band mates & people in the crowd commented on how great my guitar sound is. I love this amp more each time I play it. The only thing I need to find is a nice transparent overdrive pedal to use for a couple of low volume gigs I play on a regular basis. I hear lots of good things about the Eternity but I'm a little leery of spending over $300 for a pedal that I am unable to audition. Anyone have an Eternity pedal that they are willing to let me borrow for a week? (seriously)

OK, maybe I'm crazy, but if you'll cover the shipping, I have one of these. Custom model with the fancy case.' Get back to me if you really want to borrow it. Or if you want more info on what it sounds like I can help.

You fit right in here, Well come. Prowler, I could not agree more on your feeling on the 66, I have 2 ;D
