How is the Route 66 with P90 equipped guitars? Looking to pick up either a Les Paul Special reissue or an SG Classic and have at it with the Rt 66.
Also, I guess I have the stock Z tubes in my Rt 66 (5AR4 rectifier). Can you easily create earlier breakup by swapping the rectifier tube? If so what have you tried (type, manufacturer) and hopefully include a blurb about what it did for the amp.
Should I rebias with a rectifier tube if I want to lower the voltages a bit??

Ever since I grabbed my 66 I've been jonesin' for a P-90 fiddle, I too HAD an R-6 but traded her off My main guitar is a Tom Anderson Hollow T with the M series pups, works great with the 66 as does my R-8 w/Burstbuckers. Last Sat at our gig I broke out the Strat, I rarely play it but the tones I was pullin' were awesome so I played it the entire night. The 66 is just a killer future classic amp that loves all guit's and all pedals IMO.

OH, and if you want earlier break up your best two bet's are; 1. lower rating on your power tubes and bias accordingly 2. less effecient speaker, I am using an Alnico Weber Blue dog and am way happy...

Curt, Do you think your #7 power rating GT's make that much of a difference in having more clean headroom? I mostly play strats, and with the 66 I find that I always want more "treble"............and that with the volume at 12 oclock, things are not as clean as I would like them to be. I cannot decide if I should by another set of #6 or #7 GT's for the "clean and loud" ? (mine are #4's) Where do you set your bias?

Hi James, thought I would help. GT #6 or #7s will have a lot more headroom than the GT #4. I had a Fender Dual Professional and at one point I had to replace the 6L6s and the music store only had some at a #4 rating. Immeditalely I found the amp to be darker and had more breakup. I did not like it mainly because I was playing in a Funk, Reggae, Hip Hop, Soul band and needed a cleaner sound. Shortly after I put in tubes of a #7 rating all my highend was back, the clean headroon increased and I found the amp's sound overall to be stronger.

Yep...Arun is spot on here. When I had my Z/28 it was a loud nasty bastard, I asked Myles how to tame it and he said to swap the #5 6V6's for a #2 rating set.
I do not know what the bias is set at on my 66, it is factory stock and I've only had it a few months and have not had the time to poke around in it yet. I need to incase it drifts as others have mentioned 'cause I like what I'm getting out of it now.

James, definitely more headroom with the 6's or 7's. Mine shipped with 5's and they sounded very nice. Dewman, I have wanted to try some p-90's in my Grosh Set Neck but it sounds so good anyway that I am reluctant. Again, only speculation but I think the way the 66 is voiced would lend itself very well to P-90's. I'm hanging to try a good p-90 guitar with my amp.

Thanks for the info Arun, Yeah, with a humbucker I like the "cranked" tone with the #4's, but I need to cop a cleaner sound. Your experience confirms my suspicions. Hope you are doing well up in Edmonton my friend! Peace

Dang.........you other guys reply fast!!!! Guess I gotta get some new bottles! Curt, I wonder why yours has the #7's? Doc recommends to 5 or 6 rating. I like the idea of using the 7's though. Especially since I can just use the air break if I need some Bad Company on the spot.

Dewman, I think your best bet is a combination of everything, lesser rating valves, less efficient speakers, and maybe ask Myles about the Rectifier and even PI options to tame the beast. He'll have a good idea of what can be done Rectifier wise. Not sure whether you can substitute a 5V4 for the GZ-34 but that may be an option but Myles will have the definitive answer. Let us know what you end up doing.

You cannot get quicker breakup with a different rectifier. A bit more spongy, but that's different than power tube breakup.

I swapped the #4's and put in an old pair of #6 PRating GT's.....set the bias around 29-30 .....all of a sudden my Rt 66 had some sparkle Sounded tight, clean and twangy with a strat.......which is how I remember it sounding when I first bought it.........I guess I had gotten so used to the way it sounded that I just decided it was a REAL dark amp with not much sparkle. Feelin' like I have a new amp! sure like to hear it with a Tele?

How do I find out what my tubes are rated at? I just got it & the store didn't know. I would like less clean head room & more gian also. I roll the guitar vol. down for clean.
Also ,my lamp went out right after I got it home.It kinda work when it wants to. I took it out & the filament is un broken but looks black. Not the glass but the filament. Anyone have a similer experience?

On the tubes, IF they are the stock Groove Tubes, There is a label on the base and will have a hand written numeral, higher the # cleaner the amp.
One the lamp, NEVER had a lamp issue on any amp.
