A couple of questions:
1) Is using a 1 x 12 with my RT 66 instead of the z best going to help control the volume of this amp. In small club settings, and especially at home..........that z best and the Rt are tough on the ears..........even at lower volumes............the boomyness of the z best is what seems hard on the ears to me............so, I was wondering if a 1 x 12 would be a fix for that issue. I teach High School and the other day I set my RT and z best up in the auditorium...........and was blown away without any ear fatigue! Just "cranked" it right up! And then DUh........It occured to me that maybe the z best was just too much for the little bars we play in...as it sounded right at home in the auditorium.......
2) Does the 1 x 12 sound okay with the Rt 66........I am talking stock G 12 H 30 in one of Docs open backs? When I got my z best, I swore I would never use a single 12 again............they just seem so one directional, "too middy" and too "in your face" for lack of any better descriptions. However, so many really great players from this forum seem to love the single 12 combos and 1x12 cabs with webers and tone tubbs etc..............Seems to me I better re-evaluate my opinions on combos.
Thoughts?

I would think that one of the coolest attributes of a Route 66 is the versatility to use it with different cabinets. It's got *just* the right output power to sound good with just about any cab. With that in mind, speaker selection would be really important for a 1 12" if using it with the Route 66.
If it were me, and I was thinking of a 1 12", it would HAVE to be the Weber Silver Bell (one of the good Doctor's favorites, as the first generation Weber Silver Bell was called the P12Z, for use in Z amps...)
You could definitely fine tune the voicing you were after in a single 12" cab, you'd just need to have a good idea of what you wanted. I suggested the Silver Bell because it has a broad voicing, with a good mix of low end & warmth, but really *musical* clarity as well-
A Z cab with a 12" and Silver Bell for your club needs, then use the Z Best when you can open her up!

30 w or 50 w?

Yep, love the Silver Bell paired with a Blue Dog in my MAZ 38...
I'd go 50 watt with moderate dope. It's a little darker, smoother sounding. Alnico if you want even more darkness & compression. I like the ceramics best.
30 watt will be a touch brighter, more articulate. Light dope if you are playing at low to medium volumes, moderate if you want the speaker to "hold up" and stay focused at performance volumes.
I'd think you'd be very happy with a Silver Bell in a 1 12" Z cab with the 66...
Dave Millsap (bluzsteel), has a lot of experience with the new Eminence line. You might look into some of those as well. Plus, you can even order the Emi's at discount prices from Weber! Kind of like, one-stop speaker shopping....

thanks j +1 for the info...........
In terms of 50 vs 30watts.......................I guess I want to make sure I am still gonna get that thick tone out of the Rt 66..........is it still cool if the speaker wattage is 50 W and the amp is 32? On the other hand, I want to make sure my maz 38 is gonna have enough headroom...............as I will probably be running it more with Od's..........
you think the 50 W be the do it all for both amps? The Doc uses a 30 W for the maz 38 stock.........jus' wondering.......
Thanks bro!

50 Watt Weber will handle either amp easily. And the moderate dope will help keep the focus when using overdrives and string bends in the upper register.
Stock MAZ38's usually come with a G12H30 (30 watts) and a Vintage 30 (60 watts.) I think the 1 12" comes with a V30.
Weber speakers are very tough, and will withstand a lot of abuse... A 30 watt with moderate dope would handle the MAZ 38 or Route 66 as long as you weren't running them really cranked.

My Maz 38 combo came with a G12H30, which I changed out for an alnico Tone Tubby. I did that because the Celestion cone cry really irritates me. I don't know why they can't make their speakers stop that. The Weber speaker sounds like a good way to go and they're made in USA.

I am not a fan of the tone tubbys personally. To me they sound as if they never break in. In a closed back 4x12 cab with something like a Marshall 100 watter or Z Delta 88 driving them they finally seem to breathe a bit where they can sound nice if you like their tone.

19jmm68,
Yeah, for me too a 1x12 with the 66 is plenty in a small club. I use a no-name closed back cab with a Celestion Blue, the amp volume at about 9 o'clock and also use an Airbrake. The cab is sometimes mic-ed, sometimes not. I've been using this for over a year - playing most every weekend - and haven't yet blown up the speaker. I really like the sound of the Blue. I wonder if the new Celestion 50-watters sound the same?

Does Doc sell the cab "empty" as an option...............or do you have to select a speaker and then swap it out later? Brent recommended the G12h30..............he said thats what comes stock in the Maz Sr 1 x 12 combo. I really like the soundclip of the silver bell, however,..........and since I am buying this cab for lower volume settings............prob. the 30 with moderate dope would work. I like chime, bottom end and no loss in upper register notes................ wondering about empty cabs though? Can we buy 'em?

Hi James, you can request the Doc to put in a Weber Silver Bell. He sells a lot of open back cabs with the weber bluedog/silverbell configuration. Try emailing Doc and asking if he can make a 1x12 with the silver bell instead of the G12H. You might have to pay a slight upcharge for it but I am sure it is worth it. I don't think he sells his cabs empty, but I guess it does not hurt to ask.

I love my Route 66 through a Z 1x12 cab loaded with an Alnico Blue. It's a 15w speaker so you've got to be careful, but the tone is fantastically creamy.

I recall that a couple of months ago you were thinking about it. Did you get 8 or 16 ohm? Where is your volume knob dialed up to and do you use an Airbrake? kc

Hello 19jmm68, and greetings to everyone. Long time Z owner, just never really thought about the forum. I really enjoy it now and am glad to be a part of it. 19, i know you have resolved your 1-12 question but i just wanted to chime in. I've been using a 1-12 to great success at home and in small to medium clubs+. It does allow you to get more out of the 66 with a little less volume, of course depending on the efficiency of your speaker. I have and love a Z-best, but i got this incredible little cube cab called a soverign 1-12 from a little company in Indiana called EARCANDY. Its small , but 16" deep with two round ports in the front and i've never heard a 1-12 like it. With a Eminence 121 it has none of the directionality that always turned me away from them. You can literally stand right next to and in front of it and hear it perfectly, amazingly musical. I hate to speak of other gear cause i like the doc so much and love all things Z, But has anyone else run across these amazing cab's ??
