The more I play this amp.........The more I just keep subtracting pedals........I just wanna plug my les paul in and enjoy all the natural gifts the Rt 66 has to offer........with no effects at all. Is anyone finding this to be true? Like all the Z amps, its so organic and sounds great alone................I have my second Z on order (maz 38) so maybe my idea of one amp doing it all is changing.........I think I just want my RT 66 to be my ....crank it up Rock and roll or back it off and play tasty Jazzy/Bluesy Licks...amp. Maybe just running an RC booster with it for some extra clean gain when needed.
( No debating its versatility.......I know how good it does sound with pedals.........don't get me wrong)
Anyway, just some thoughts...........anyone else feelin' the same way?

Right on! With my recent tube changes, my Ibanez Artist especially sounds great into the 66...no pedals needed. The tele sometimes needs a booster for higher gain tones, but I too am really liking the naked sound of the 66 these days.
I'll probably always hang on to my peds cuz I'm so used to having them around.

OK, I'm in the no-pedals club .... sort of. Most of the time I use a Clapton Strat w/o any effects ..... I do use the mid-boost on the Strat quite a bit though, so there's my fattener-upper.
With my Les Paul, it sounds good w/o any boost, but I do use a Banzai Cold Fusion for lead sounds.

Glad to hear.........last week I spent a few hours trying to make my RT 66 sound good with my bb preamp....and it did sound pretty cool, but also pretty fake as compared with Les Paul straight in.........and it dawned on me.......duh........this amp don't need any more gain boost etc.......and with an airbrake.........you have humbucker heaven at a reasonable volume. aaaahhhh! My conclusion .........for my ears.......is No OD or Gain Pedal in this amp sounds as good as a Humbucker straight in............Single Coils - different story.........my AC and BB sound beautiful with my strat.........
This is just my observation for me.........out of my frustration to not be able to make any gain pedal + the Rt 66 match the tone in my head.

With the exception of my deja vibe pedal, all my other pedals are used for solo color ie: Wah, fuzz, boost. The only overdrive I use is what's coming from the amp. The 66 cleans up so well, it's a joy to play. I also use a Foxrox Thru Zero Flanger to give a "Life in the Fastlane" type sweep to some mid sections. So basically I'm running "straight in" until a solo or the odd color is needed. I also play the "bluesier" solos without any pedal help. I have the fatboost for rock solos or the fulldrive2 on compression cut setting (clean boost), and fuzz or octavia for higher gain. I really don't like tube screamer type pedals. I could get strung up for this but I think they all sound the same once they are turned on. I think you lose alot of the amps character (there goes my Karma!) ;D

Having said that, I can see myself getting a Z28 and running it in stereo with the 66 and echoczar and doing an ambient, effects heavy album sometime soon also. Effects or no effects, you need a solid base to work from.

Wow! I was looking at a used z-28 head that is for sale down the road.......I did not have the chance to "open it up" in the store, but, my main question was how it differs in tone from the rt. 66.........I know it has the same tone stack and is the same kind of "turn it up and go" amp........probably not as dark or thick sounding as the KT-66.....with the 6v6's...............anyway, other than running them in stereo, would it make sense to own both amps? (other than satisfying G.A.S!!!) Are they different enough?
I was thinking in addition to the tone being different, the z-28 would be the amp you would grab for a smaller club setting and then your rt 66 for the big stuff.

Yep, that would be the idea, or run them both clean in stereo for quieter gigs. I think the Z28 would add some nice sparkle to the top end in stereo. I could use the z28 for smaller venues on its own though I suspect it's still pretty loud but I have an airbrake that I hardly use. Just an idea for the future as I may have some "ambient" projects coming up. I'm more that happy just using the 66 for now though. It takes pedals and boosts so well I can play any venue without being too loud. I've always got the mini too. Maybe just get another! Or three others for the Mini Quad Stack! YEAH!
