Thanks, Myles! I just bought a new SAG-AX7M-MPI from GT. I think it helps sturdy things up a bit, especially when I crank everything on the amp. The Rt66 feels more punchy and snappy, but also smoother when I crank her up. Cool beans.

The Rt66 feels more punchy and snappy, but also smoother when I crank her up. Cool beans. The MPIs are now made off selected M's that have high current drive and the long plates love to be pushed yet hang in a long time before going into compression. I use these almost exclusively as PIs these days.

Myles, how much is one of these PI tubes you speak of? Do I have to order through GT, or can I find them at a dealer?

Myles, how much is one of these PI tubes you speak of? Do I have to order through GT, or can I find them at a dealer? They are $28 retail but any GT dealer can get them and many stock them. This includes Guitar Centers. Most dealers will discount pretty heavily. Make sure it is a tube that actually says SAG-AX7-MPI on the label. On the tube itself it sould also be silkscreened "matched phase inverter" right on the tube so don't let a vendor who thinks all GT preamps tubes are matched sell you one that is not an MPI. You can also get these directly off the GT website at www.groovetubes.com/product.cfm?Product_ID=1723 but off the website there is no discount (as GT does not undersell it's dealers) but if you do order off the website, in the comments section write something like "show this order to Myles" and tell me what amp and your primary guitar is and I will hand trace one for you. Hand traced stuff normally costs an additional $10 but for the folks in here I do this on my own time.

Hi Myles, I just ordered one of these for my 66. Looking forward to hearing it. Thanks for the hand traced offer to all of us.

I've switched back to the Sovtek that came with the amp. The SAG sounded real nice...seemed to make the amp overdrive much quicker. Has a real nice chime/bounce thing going on. I lost a bit of power, or clean headroom at least. Last couple of gigs I didn't use my attenuator...nice on one hand, but I also like the secure feeling of HAVING to use an attenuator. The Sovtek retains more clean headroom and my power is back. If I played more rock tunes with my band that require crunch a majority of the time, I would switch back to the SAG from GT. But I need some of the 66's cleans right now too.

how old are your power tubes?

They are two years old...but they are NOS GEC KT66's rated for around 10 000 hours so I'm sure they have lots of life left in em. Especially now as the amp only gigs. I practise with the mini at home. Plenty of ommph left in the amp, it just seems to be slightly "dull". But also I have been playing smaller clubs and having to attenuate with the airbrake which I don't really like to do. Where have all the venues gone? The Pokies are killing us over here. (slot machines) All the pubs are putting them in instead of live music.

Brutal! I'm always left in dismay when someone will drop a few hundred dollars on a DJ, and complain when they can hire a decent cover band for the same amount! Maybe I'm lucky, but I can't say I've ever heard anyone complain that my covers gig failed to please the party. Live music is exactly that...live music! I must have had fresh tubes the whole time.....
On that attentuation bit - I've noticed the effect of that, "sooner than expected." But yeah, those GECs should be solid, right?

The trouble with the Pokies is the pubs MAKE tons of money and just see it as an easier option over live bands. Plus everyone seems to be moving into the inner city so noise restrictions are becoming more prominent too! Lets hope music doesn't die at grassroots level. Yeah, they're ( GEC KT66's) pretty tough! I don't like to attenuate more for the effect it has on tone than for any damage to tubes. I know the airbrake is great but I still notice when it's used. That's why I want the big clubs back...so I can crank the 66 unattenuated. ;D BAN THE POKIES!

Plenty of ommph left in the amp, it just seems to be slightly "dull". . Ok, mark that comment down to having to play at 12 oclock and the airbrake on 3 all night. That accounts for the slight "dullness". I just fired up the amp, played it unattenuated where I like it and it sounded FREAKING AMAZING! Man I love this amp, I wish I got to play it like that more often. Played it for about half an hour, then swapped out the Sovtek LPS for the SAG MPI. Not bad, something kinda nice there but for me, the Sovtek is so big and round, it is staying in. I totally agree with Beckanon on this one, except I do play rock and prefer the Sovtek LPS It's nice to know the Sovtek is ok after all this time and it's nice to have a backup. I can always throw the GT in the mini (I think?) if the 12ax7M goes down. I hate to think people aren't getting to hear this amp unleashing it's awesomeness! It's really annoying. I guess I need to get to work in the marketing department and start filling bigger venues for the selfishness of being able to play my amp where it should be! Hey, that sounds like motivation! ;D

I'm finally going to get the GT 12AX7 P I tube this weekend. I'm looking forward to trying it out. In the 1970's it was disco and sequencers killing live music. That died down but the money hasn't gone up in clubs much until recently and that's only in some clubs. Some pay us $600 and others scream at $300. I always clubs should start the music earlier. Not starting until 9:00 or 10:00 seems counterproductive when working folks are normally going to bed about the during the week so they don't out as much as I think they would if things got going sooner. Death to POKIES!

I switch between the 12AX7M PI and the 12AX7R2 PI (both matched, the R2 is the Sovtek you speak of) in my 6545. I find the R2 to be a bit more ummmmm aggressive or brighter? Both are appropriate in their place, for me. Both are excellent, and I feel lucky to have them ;D
"support your local musician" by the way! And totally OT, Tas, I met a real cute girl from Oz on my way to the train this morning - she was leaving the hostel that's near me. Ah life. I think I'll have to visit the other half of the planet one day.

Have any of you tried a Mullard CV4004 as the phase inverter. I have several of these in my collection and just tried one.... seems big and fat to me.
