I've had this 2x12 open back cab for about a year, and I've never taken it out, so last night I loaded it up instead of my two convertible cabs. This 2x12 was empty when I bought it from Sam Austin, and I happened to have a G12H and a V30 here that were both brand new, so although the cab shows some wear, the tone is not broken in.
I set up the Maz 38 and Remedy with the Radial Headbone through two Airbrakes (one for each head) - did you know you need FIVE speaker cables handy to do that? I had a brain fart and only had four on hand, so I borrowed a spare from the bass player to get things running.
This cab, with these two speakers, has monstrous bottom end. It is REALLY fat. I ended up lowering the treble on both amps, because the top end was a bit ragged - probably that unbroken V30 doing its new V30 spike we all know and do not love. I expect that will smooth out as time goes on, assuming I keep using this cab.
With the Maz 38, it was pretty quick to get it dialed in, but with the Remedy I struggled a little. By the middle of the second set I had the Remedy percolating through there pretty well. By the third set though, the tones I was getting were outstanding. I was surprised because I had the treble way over at about 8:30 o'clock - I usually don't do that. Hi volume was at 3 o'clock, and normal volume was at noon. Bass and middle were both dimed.
Our bass player was initially worried about that cab, because in the first tune it was apparent that there was a lot of bottom. But once I got things adjusted, he came over and complemented the tones I was getting. Even with all that bottom, everything was articulate and did not interfere with what he was doing. If you like a FAAAT tone, that's always going to be a worry. No need to worry about it with this setup.
If you like your Z-Best, but you don't want to use it indoors, this is a pretty close second place in my view. The Z-Best is better, but has such a long throw that running open back indoors seems to work better for me. Highly recommended!
