I have just received the master back (from Scott Hull in New York) for my latest album which all guitar tracks were recorded with just the Route 66 and my Grosh Set Neck (004) Extremely happy with the guitar tracks and will post soundbytes on my site soon as well as some mpegs of the grosh and Route 66 being played. I am so in love with this combination! In fact, all the tracks were recorded on the one setting (basically cranked, three oclock on all dials) and I used different volumes on guitar for shades of clean,semi-clean, dirty, frightening! Haven't had it printed and pressed yet, but the album will be called "Hypothermia"

I have a Dr Z airbrake which I have been using live. Usually I run the amp at about one oclock on treble and volume with bass on three oclock, air brake on two or three, depending on the size of the club sometimes I run it all at 12 oclock and leave out the attenuator which is great sound too, but still quite loud. My small club set up is to run the amp with all the dials on about 9 oclock and use my Fulltone Fulldrive 2 with the COMPRESSION CUT switch on,(clean boost) NOT the overdrives. No attenuator I've found I can drive the amp to a point where it sounds "ampy" and will clean up with the volume rolled down so it just stays on all the time and then I have the second boost side for more gain if I need it. I can play tiny places and still pull a great sound this way. But it is a bit like driving a Ferrari in a school zone! Outdoors and big venues I just put em all on two or three oclock and ride my guitar volume. I also loaned my rig to my friend Simon Patterson, who is one of Australia's more respected guitarists, for a jazz gig and he ran it three oclock volume, 11 oclock bass and 9 oclock treble. Sounded amazing. This way he had lots of headroom, all the touch sensitivity and a very clean signal. It was a very small room also, and it never sounded too loud, just big and warm. The tone controls make it a very versitile amp and the ZBest is voiced so well...you gotta love it!
Thanks Kaseri, I'm in the process of re-doing my website, shouldn't be too long.

Can someone respond to the post I made? I need help. My RT66 is simply not giving me drive at all. I was afraid this would happen. I buy an amp to replace my Marshall cause the Marshall is too loud to drive. I cranked the RT66 ALL THE WAY and can barely get any drive/distortion.

I buy an amp to replace my Marshall cause the Marshall is too loud to drive. I cranked the RT66 ALL THE WAY and can barely get any drive/distortion. What kind of guitar and speakers are you using? I had the same problem when I first got my 66, but at the time on only had a strat (G&L Legacy actually) with Fralin Vintage hot pickups. I find that the 66 is VERY sensitive to pickup output. With a strat it can stay pretty clean. I had an eye opening experience when I played a G&L ASAT Deluxe with a Duncan JB in the bridge (HOT pup) through it. Absolutely amazing searing gainy overdrive at lower volumes. It was like a completely different amp. Speakers make a big difference too. I bought a Jenkins Highway 61 2x12 cab and put Weber P12B/P12S combo in it. These speakers seemed to add there own compression to the mix and really opened the whole rig up. I now have a Hamer Artist Korina humbucker model guitar (killer btw) that I love to play through the 66. It has Duncan '59s in it and drives the amp really nicely. I do use a Fulldrive 2 with it though and that sounds great. I find that overdrive is great with the 66 in every mode (Flat mids, vintage, comp-cut). With that I can get a great variety of overdrive sounds without going deaf. I have a couple of clips of the Hamer -> FD2 -> Rt66 that I recorded. I was playing around with a really cheap and crappy Radio Shack mic plugged straight into my Laptop. I was trying to see if I could really record anything. So with the cheap mic it sounds more compressed than it really does but may give you some idea of what the FD2 can do with a 'bucker guitar and the 66. Here are the details on the clip Guitar: '01 Hamer Artist Korina HB w/Duncan '59s Fulldrive 2 Settings: Vol - 11:00 Tone - 3:00 Overdrive - Noon Boost - 9:00 Mode - Flat-Mids Rt66 Settings: Treb - 3:00 Bass - 9:00 Vol - 9:00 Cab: Jenkins Hwy 61 2x12 with Weber P12B/P12S undoped. Both 8ohm wired in parallel (4ohm), cab running closed back in these clips. As I said these were recorded with a really crappy Radio Shack mic. They are just me playing around with the same old tired pentatonic licks while checking different mic placements, so the 4 clips are all pretty similar. All 4 clips have the FD2 running with the boost on (higher gain setting) so this is really my higher gain sound for leads. Shane. www.soundclick.com/bands/0/shanebowen_music.htm

Sounds like I'm in trouble. I'm not getting the drive that I like.
I have a Strat and Celesion Blues.

Would I be wise to try sticking EL34's in there? Is that possible?

Would I be wise to try sticking EL34's in there? Is that possible? Not sure how that would go. The KT45 uses EL34s and I think that it is louder and has more headroom than the 66 so that may actually take you in the wrong direction. Maybe someone in the know will weigh in. Shane

Would I be wise to try sticking EL34's in there? Is that possible? EL34's require more filament voltage and a certain screen grid resister. I would definitely email Dr Z for info.

bullsh*t holloway. You E-Mailed me 7/2 at 10.00 pm, I read it sunday morning , yes sunday morning and responded to it. The response is still in my outbox.
What have you come here just to start trouble? I see you posting the same BS on other forums, yes it's starting to pissing me off.
You buy a used amp, they guy sends it to you with the tubes bouncing around inside, you have buyers remorse, and a panic attack, then you blame the manufacturer.
I know since I quit smoking I have been a little short with some, but man don't come into my house and start bullshitting about what I do and didn't do.

DrZ: I sent you an e-mail about a month ago that never got a response. I sent one on Sunday that hasn't gotten a response. All I said was "Dr. Z doesn't respond to my e-mails." I feel this is a legitimate statement. I didn't say "Dr. Z is a ****" or anything like that. You really think I'd come here just to start trouble? I'm having problems and this is the best place to come. I've heard that when the questions are deemed stupid, you don't respond to them. I figured mine fell into this category. Where else can I go to figure this out but here?
I sent an e-mail about a month ago and haven't received a response. Seems like you're taking my comments too personally. I don't mean any harm. I just want my amplifier to work correctly. Yes, it's used. I couldn't afford it otherwise. It's not like I'm going around tarnishing your name. I've got better things to do with my life than troll around and bash amp makers.

Dude I did respond, I still have the post in my out file and will try and re-send it. I sent it on Sunday of a holiday weekend.
The only thing I can think of is that the bias is set way too low keeping the amp very clean coupled with the high efficiant Vox Blues.
Have the bias checked and set it for about 38 mA that should warm it up quite a bit, between 32 and 38 should give you what you want.
