I'm thinking of splashing out on some high quality tubes for my '66. Can anyone enlighten me on which tubes affect the tone most in the signel chain since I can't afford to replace all at once. $200 for nos genelex kt66's! I run the amp hot through a marshall attenuator, but find the bottom end gets mushy with the volume past 3 o'clock and sustained notes tend to fizz after 3 or 4 seconds. Current tubes: GT KT66 HP, winged C EF86, JJ 12AX7 and sovtek GZ34. Your thoughts and experience would be appreciated. By the way, I re wired my cabinet to 16 ohms to suit my attenuator, has anyone tried this?

I've heard that the Dario EF86's are supposed to "improve" the tone. If it's better to them then that's fine, but I really think it's too subjective to say "better" maybe different.
The Dr makes these amp to ssound great wwith ccurrent production tubes and they do. You won't find me spending my money on NOS tubes any time soon.
If your bottom is mushing out and your notes aren't sustaining then you might be cranking that attenuator too much. Your amp will always sound like crap if you cut too much volume with the atttenuator.

I realize this thread is 2 and a half years old. But in my experience with tube amps, V1 is by far the most influential tube with respect to tone.
Hope this helps, bs
