Dear Doc, All else being equal (say 2x12 of Greenbacks) is the 66 about the same volume as a JTM45? I'm looking for something to give me the Mick Taylor tone on "Crusade" in a physically smaller package.
Thanks, Pete.

The 66 and a JTM 45 are very different amps imo.

rpavich: you can afford it. I found a 66 with a 2x12 z cab w/ blues for 1600. Just check ebay every day. Also, they're allowing sales here on the forum for now. Just be patient. I just got lucky.

I have just rediscovered buckers with this amp...Sounds very clear with a strat with lil 59's. I usually disliked buckers, but the 66 makes them sound very rich and thick....it is almost addictive!

The 66 is now my #1 go to amp!! I just love the clarity & thick tone with a Strat. Don't get me wrong ...I still love my Z28, but the 66 is just that tone I have been hearing in my head for a long time.

Still my #1 The SRZ is a really great amp as well, but the cleans from the 66 are better IMO.

Now your talkin'! I didn't think it would take you all that long to chime in there Taz! ;D I'm expecting a new baby 6v6 redhead to arrive on the 12th June down my part of the World. I don't know if it will end up being my favourite, but I'm sure I am going to love it. The way I am going, I am heading towards having the largest collection of "Dr.Z's" in Australia, well maybe Byron bay anyway, getting one model after another until I finally acquire that holy grail KT45.

How about the Holy Trinity. I'll shoot for maybe Mazerati GT, Stangray, Route 66 Maybe substitute the Stang for an RXES.
Maybe Ghia, 66, KT45?
Phil, Don or Steve might be the people to speak to on this one.

IMO the holy grail of Z is the Route 66 ;D Thou shalt adjust the bias, and the rectifier, and the signal path. And then thou shalt bask in the glow of large bottles, and the string-to-string separation, and the pedal-friendliness, and the unique voicing. And then when all other amps have been sampled, shalt thou return to the source, the mother road, the Route 66.

The 66 is all that, but I was thinking Monty Python when I wrote the post.
In fact, the 66 is oddly responsive and full, to the point that everything you're doing on the strings comes through with an unusual immediacy. That's a good thing, but it's the proverbial "veil removed" grail of audiophiles. It's got a great rich clean, that doesn't seem to get much ink.
Do the other EF86 amps do this, too? In terms of the immediacy? It's not "presence" as on the SRZ and Galaxie. I'm not sure I'm finding the right words, here.
