Bought an RX ES and Z 212 open-back cab a couple of weeks ago - very, very cool.
Here's the story. I went to my favorite music store to purchase an amp, one that would take me into Marshall territory. (I'm a Les Paul sort of guy with a classic rock heart.) I had my eye on a particular amp, but in the process decided to play a number of different amps to confirm my decision. I played Germinos, Carrs, Divided13, Marshalls, etc.
Then I played the RX ES. That was the tone I had in my head - great tone at a variety of volumes, plus I found that the tone controls were very interactive. I then played the head through a couple of Z cabs to see which one I favored. The one that worked best for me was the one with 2 Alnico Blues wired at 4 ohms.
Since that time, I played with the band more than a couple of times now (mostly classic rock covers, plus some 70s-80s stuff). Just a couple of pedals: a Picture Wah, Keeley modded Tube Screamer and a Xotic BB. My main guitar is a LP 58 RI with RS/Fralin True 60s, Pigtail bridge, stoptail, bushings and RS matched pots.
Very easy to cop the tone of one of my favorite players, Dave Grissom - articulate, nice note separation, with an ever so slight hint of compression and a bit of hair: Volume 4.5; Bass 5.5; Middle 5; Treble 5.5 (or there abouts). The Alnico Blues sound fabulous - complex and sweet. The tone sits nice in the mix with rest of the band (another guitar player, bass and drums).
I have also learned that the Over Dose is my new best friend. Initially, I wasn't too sure about it but when I used it to pump up my leads - perfect! Just enough "lift" to make the leads stand out. The OD feature also seems to sweeten the tone a bit without changing its overall character. I found that I the TS and BB were not used as often as they were in the past.
Playing again with the band this week and weekend. It's gonna be fun.
With tone and oneness, Mike
