I was wondering, has anyone tried using a good 5751 in both V1 and V3 of their Prescription Extra Strength?
I'm wanting to get a little more headroom out of the amp and possibly mellow it out a touch. The RxES has crazy gain on tap, and while its cool, its not what I bought the amp for.
Mike @ KCA recommended this combo, and I thought it was a cool idea. I figured I'd ask your experiences while I'm waiting to get the okay from my wife to pull the trigger on them.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated! - mk

Not in the RXES but I have in a MAZ Jr NR and a 'Rati and it smooths them out nicely, go for 'em.

Mike,
I would try it in V3 first and test it out - it may be all you need to give you a touch more headroom but not tame it completely.
Hope this helps. Tom

Hey Mike, I tried them briefly, they were GEs pulled from my Maz Sr. It did tame the beast somewhat but the breakup was still there. However, I only tried them briefly using the lo input and overdose on. My setting were Bass 1.5, Mid & Treble 2.5, volume 4, airbrake 4. Caveat; the way the RXES puts hair on the notes is still a novelty for me, I don't know that it's something I'll aways want, so after a short test period I preferred the breakup of the GT 12AX7Ms and put them back in. I really didn't give the 5751s a fair trail period and did I not play them in a band setting.
The RXES in still very new to me so I can't say I'm your best source of knowledge but thought this might help. I'd say go for it with moderalty priced set of 5751s as they do make a difference just not want I was looking for but might work well for you. Let us know if you do.
Good Luck, Drew

No, but I did ty a GT at7 special in v3 and it sort of cut the balls off the harmonics. I'm back to using all Telefunken's in the pre -including the ef-86, which is wolds better than the Dario it came with, Which was not a bad tube-but the funkin'EF is just real dark and hairy. real close to the Paisley thing. Late response . . .
The other night I decided to swap out to 5751 in both V1 and V3. Gotta say, loved the sound.
Was cleaner, but also had that little hair as well too. I have a Blue Floral that has the Lindy Fralin Blues in the bridge ~ with the 12ax7's, it always broke up too soon for me. Switching to the 5751 gave me the sound I was wanting out of it - and the stock p/u on my Pink Paisley sound great as well too. Still very articulate and touch responsive.
Hope this helps.

Cool, I had been wondering about this myself. I may have to give this a try some day.

The 5751 is a fav tube of mine. In any amp it soothes and warms the tone. Even my high gaioers benefit by a 5751 in the path. Often I use it as th phase inverter (last preamp) tube. Secondly, it may also be the first tube of any channel.... 12AY7's did similar duty in some 50's Tweeds. But the 5751 is even deeper in tone than the 12AY7 to my ears. The RCA COMMAND BLACKPLATE is my fav 5751. But any 5751 can make a change.
Good Luck!
