Still debating between the Stang Ray and RxES as my next amp. I was just wondering, is the RxES considered class A like the Ray? I didn't see anything about that on the description of the amp on the main webpage, so thought I would ask. Thanks

Neither are true Class A. But rather they are 'cathode biased' amps...which in today's amp world is something that is being passed off as Class A.

And, don't get too hung up on the whole "Class A" thing. It's not the holy grail of amp design anyway. Alot of the world's most famous amps run class AB. The whole "Class A" thing is totally overblown.

I was just curious. You hear alot of talk these days about an amp's class of operation, I tend to judge them by how they sound no matter what class they run in. As I was looking at this amp as the next one I buy, I just wanted to get as much detail as possible, plus I always like talking gear. I hope to be able to try one out first before making the purchase, so I will be able to base my decision on that. I already played the Stang Ray and must admit it was very tempting to just buy that up on the spot, however I decided to hold off until I can play the RxES and go from there. Thanks again.

AJ i have an RXES combo and i love it.I want a ray as soon as my budget permits though. It all depends on what style of music you are covering to which amp you decide on.To me the RX covers more ground than the Ray.I also read in another post that the Doc is considering building some 1x12 combo Stangray and RXES sometime in 2007 so that might be something to look forward to.I know i am seriously thnking of a 1x12 ray. Any help i can give you on the RXES i would be more than glad to help just pm me with any questions.Just a novice here but ive had the amp about a year and a half now and i like it more and more every day. Cathode bias is what we like. Class A is not necessarily so desireable. Some of the most expensive solid state and tube stereo amps run class for the punch and lack of compression. That's not what we want in a guitar amp.

I've changed a super reverb, a vibroluxe reverb and both of my 1957 bassmans to cathode bias. it just sounds better to me.

I agree. Cathode biased amps just have that little something extra. Thanks Mike, I'll let you know if I've got any more questions. The 1x12 Ray/RxES would be perfect for me.
