Would anyone recommend a particular cab/speaker combination and ohm rating for a RXES head? I'm currently using an Avatar oversized/closed back cab @ 16ohms that sounds pretty darn good but I still think I can get closer to what I'm looking for. Absolutely love this amp. Thanks for any input

Well tell us a bit about "what your looking for" and we'll see what's up. I'll share this...my RXES sounds awesome with every speaker and cab I've tried, Right now I'm running it through an older square Z 1x12 with an Eminance Texas Heat and that's pretty cool. I really like it with my Weber Alnico Blue Dog (30 watt) too but I have that in my Jr now. the RXES simply smokes through 2 Greenbacks

The Avatar is loaded with a greenback and a g12h30 that are breaking in nicely. This cab sounds good with both my '73 50watt nmv Marshall as well as the RXES. I guess I'm thinking of a cab to use exclusively for the Z and just use the Avatar for the Marshall.
I'm wondering if a Z-best cab or an open back would be the ticket. I used to own a Maz 38 combo with a g12h 30 and a v/30 that rocked but I'm enjoying the tones I'm getting even more from the RXES. IT just seems to be even more complex and articulate, does'nt over compress.
I need something that can handle some rpm's but still get pretty when I need it to. Also does the RXES like an Airbrake? Response much appreciated.

I have 2 Z best 2x12 cabs, one is a stocked Z best 2x12 closed back and the second one is a Z best 2x12 open back with Celestion blues. Both of these speakers are awesome with RxEs. ;D I would highly recommend a Z air Brake to tame the BEAST though. This is one LOUD amp that likes to be pushed hard. I don't have the ES, but my older Rx really came alive with the Eminence Cannabis Rex. I have a Mesa wide 1x12 and an Avatar 2x12, both have the C-Rexs. Before the speaker swaps, I was planning on selling/trading the amp. Now I don't think I'll ever part with it.

The C-Rex is a good buy and it uses an actual Tone Tubby cone.

I second the airbrake for the RXES. The amps comes alive when the volume is 11:00 and higher. Without the airbrake 11:00 is too loud for the situations/band that I play.
As far as speakers go it's so subjective and the style of music makes a huge difference. Personally I prefer open back for a couple of reasons; 1) playing a smaller room (not miked up) the drummer can hear what I'm doing, 2) tones eminating from the back and front of the cab sounds more open and less focused to me, YMMV. I do enjoy the sound and thud factor from a tube amp being pushed into a 4x12 closed back cab but that's not the style of music I play.

I just got my Dr Z RXES and I am using the 2X10 matching open back cabinet. I think it smokes ...nice combination for what I am doing.

Not saying its the best but, I played mine through a 1x15 bottom all weekend just to check it out...Weber F150 50 watt...excellent. I loved it...plugged it back into the 2 greenabacks....loved that too...I'm thinking of getting a 1x15 baffle made for my combo now only because the single speaker seemed make the volume a little easier to deal with and the bass responce is great.

Oh Man, I didn't need to read that! Thanks Frank! I'm still trying to find the best cab/speaker scenario. I like the thought of a single 15. How's the high end? My current favorite cab/spk is a 1x12 widebody 3/4 back cab with a texas heat and beam blocker but I'd like to reduce the cab size and still maintain the thick bottom with an open back. Hummm 1x15.... Is there still chime?

Just came home and A/B'd the 1x15 Weber F150 and the the 2x12 GB's in the combo cab. The 1x15 reminds me more of a Fender type Stones grind. The 2x12 are more "lead" guitar fat sustain thing. I used a Tele, High Input/ Volume up about 3/4, Treble on 2, Mid on 5, Bass on 3. I guess you could adjust things but I tried to just get the speaker difference. Less volume on the 1x15 and not as boomy. Clearer. The GB's do smoke though...Think I'll leave well enough alone...Wait, I just found a cab here with and old G12H30 and a Weber c1230 with a bass cone....We're all crazy you know...I may be back to edit.

I've been using an Avatar 2x12 closed back too and I love the tone .... it's just a matter of finding the perfect speakers. I love the GM12 - 20 watters that are in there, but I'm afraid of blowing them up so I am looking into other options.
If you hit on a more magical combination, be sure and let us know.

2 Greenbacks in an open back configuration does really sound good. But I have to say, the Weber Silver/Blue combo speakers sound just down right great!

I just got one of the new Dr. Z 2x10 cabs. Gigged it tonight with the RXES. YES!!! Used it closed back... tames the amp a little, but still PLENTY of sound (imagine that) Same room with a Z-best and I'd have been plugging in an Air Brake. The new 2x10 really seems to have the right stuff. I love the RXES through a Z-Best but this was easier to tame. No small sound from this cab, but I could hit the overdose without blowing my wallet out of my back pocket.... This was a short set tonight, but I left very, very, very happy...

I have a 212 Z-Best closed back cab...and the RXES head sounds amazing with it. I like to play with quite a bit of low end and this delivers for sure. Paul
