So I've been playing the Remedy through either the G12-65 or the Z-Best the last few gigs, and it's been great. But I've been wanting to try out a pair of Golds. I got the idea to put a Gold in my Maz Jr, so I unloaded my THD cab that I've had Golds in since they came out, and put one in my Jr and the other in my Convertible cab where the G12-65 had been. Left the back off, and I took that cab out last night with the Remedy. I had planned to take both my convertible cabs and A/B the Maz Sr like I did last week, but at the last minute I decided to take one guitar, one amp and one cab. Bad load in, so this helped.
Holy cow - the Gold certainly is brighter! I ended up with both volumes set the same (about 3 o'clock) which is considerably darker through other setups. Not here though - even set like that I had to roll the treble back to noon and the midrange back to 3 o'clock. And talk about attitude - jumpin jiminy crickets!
With that upper mid CRAAANNNGGGG that the Golds have, this setup was just over the top angry sizzle. And louder. It had plenty of bottom too, but oddly, once the band started that wasn't as apparent as when I was testing.
One thing that just floored me - I was playing a solo and got on a note that I wanted to just wiggle for a sec - well it was just not going away, so I just kept wiggling it, and it just stayed there as long as I was willing to hold it. That got me to playing a bit with that "feature" and of course it changed my approach on a number of things. On one tune I just clamped my fingers on an open E and within a few seconds I had a sustaining tone going that I modulated with my whammy - it would still be going if I hadn't shut off the amp.
Of course we were playing pretty loud - I had the Remedy on full power and the Airbrake on two clicks, so our ears are ringing a bit this morning. I have to try both Golds next time (when the load in is simpler) and see how that goes. I may put the G12-65 back in or grab a G12H-30 to push the bottom end up a bit.
Bottom line - if you want ANGRY rock and roll tones, try this!
