Last night I decided to take just the Remedy and my 1x12 Convertible with G12-65 (closed back). I hesitated because I mainly play my Strat with this band, and hadn't really dialed in the Remedy for the Strat yet, but there's nothing like forcing the issue, so that's what I did.
First order of bizness was to get the cab up off the floor a bit so I could hear it ok - found a milk crate for that duty and it was about the right height. Stuck the Remedy on top and the Airbrake on top of that, just in case.
I started the Remedy on half power and brake'd it quite a bit to get set up. I discovered that I liked the tone controls all maxed, so that made that part easy. I wanted a nice fat clean tone with the guitar volume rolled back, and some grind when I rolled the guitar volume up. Seemed to get there with the HI level set to about 2:30 o'clock, and the Normal level set to around noon.
About the only adjustments I made all night were volume adjustments. I started with the Airbrake on one click, but very quickly set it to thru. I think I played the whole first set that way, but by the end I was needing a tad more, so to start off the second set I switched to full power and two clicks on the Airbrake. That was just right. Nice to have all these fine tuning options.
So we played the second set and during the next break I was sitting at a table and the keyboard player comes over and shakes my hand and says my guitar sounds freaking amazing tonight. He has NEVER done that before, so I figure he heard something he liked in the Remedy. ;D
The thing is, I agree with him - the Strat was REALLY sounding great. I mostly use the neck pup, but there were tunes for each of the five positions plus one tune with all three pups on, and they all sounded spectacular. I grabbed the Les Paul for about three tunes, but I was having so much fun with the Strat that I played it on several tunes that I had planned to play the Les Paul on. It was really that good.
Bottom line - I no longer think of the Remedy as a humbucker amp. Yeah, it sounds great with humbuckers, and I plan to explore that a lot more going forward. But the Remedy just smoked everything I have here with my Strat. Looking down at my pedal board, I realized I can get rid of most of it now, and for some gigs just leave it at home and bring the Strat, a cord, and the Remedy. That's going to be essentially all I need for this gig.
If you haven't tried a Remedy yet, you are missing out on one of the great amps. I don't know how Dr. Z does it...
