I also posted this in the general forum: Today when I came home my son Jack (15) wanted to swap the guitar he was using for a different one. He wanted to move away from the humbucker thing, get single coils and a whammy bar. So he took my natural ash strat. Then he wanted to "one upmanship" me by challenging my Z-28 / Carmen Ghia rig. He thought he could do it in a more simple and elegant manner. He wanted clean tones and distorted tones. I think he had been watching too much of Carl Verheyen's "Rumor Mill" DVD and learned that amp switching is not a compromise where channel switching generally is a compromise. So .... with the knowledge that my buffered A/B switch is on it's way back to me from being on loan he built a rig by stealing my Mini Z for the distorted sounds and is using a Pierson Tweed Champ for his cleaner tones. So .... my avatar in my sig block is the last photo of the Z stack in our bar for now. I have to admit, it is a pretty cool setup to say the least and at bedroom levels with no attenuators, tricks, effects, etc., you can cover a lot of bases and styles. Now hopefully he will not find my stereo pedal board under the couch in the family room!

Ah, theft. What are family members for?
Looks like lots of fun. I'm going to try it w/ my Mini-Z and my 5F1...

Whooohooo! I have a Victoria Tweed Champ clone and Dr. Z Mini -- and no kids yet! : ) What A/B or A/B/Y switch would you recommend?
Can't say enough about my new Mini -- what an amazing little amp. All those years of going through various amps (only to be used at home) only to settle on one small box with a single knob and loads of usable tones and distortion. With my Vicky, it's quite a pair.
I might only have one glitch in the A/B situation due to the fact that, for the first time in my life, I now actively use my guitar's tone knobs with the Mini, whereas I would leave them be with the Vicky. Has your son had any issues on that front?

But it was cheap ... it is red .... has a battery in it for the LEDs and has two buttons .... one is A/B and the other is the Y button. I find any A/B switches work fine for the most part. You do not nead a pricy one if you are mostly doing A or B as only one amp loads the guitar pickup at a time. I don't think my son uses the guitars tone at all. I think he leaves it at 10. He does use the volume a lot though. The Victoria is a killer Champ by the way.

Thanks Myles, great thread -- and response to the other thread on a clean compliment to the Mini. I've been tracking that one as well. I love the Vicky and yearn to try a Swart, which I hear are even better -- but, I think I'm most in love with my Mini, especially for modern stuff. My '52 RI Tele (with Fralin bridge) and Strats sound a tad harsh with tones at 10. They're fantastic around 5 or 6, but maybe that will change as the amp breaks-in.

That's exactly the kind of rig I was talking about in the other thread! The only difference would be that I'd try a panning pedal to get the whole range of clean -> distorted sound.
Killer!
Maybe a Weber kit... Those are pretty inexpensive & are supposed to be fairly high quality & easy for a n00b like myself.

I have a friend who is building a Weber Fender Champ style...chances are the Champ will be either not loud enough or too distort-y to run clean next to the Mini, but there certainly are other Weber kits.

If the kit is like a real Fender Tweed Champ it will be cleaner than the Mini Z. I've got a couple of tweed Champs so I'm very familiar with their sound and I've played a Mini Z so I have a good basis for this opinion.

You are totally on the money .... the Tweed Champ is much cleaner and has much more clean headroom. But ... when you push a tweed champ to it's higher levels there is little out there that when recorded that sounds as huge and magical in those distorted tones.
