Hey there,
Ive got a 2004? mazerati 112 combo with a V30. I was just wondering what mods, changes, tube swaps or other alterations i could do to: a) Get rid of the glassy high end (not all of it but most of it. I might need a pedal for this eh?) b) get some more gain (2 or 3 dbs more) and c) more mids
Thanks

Don't try to trick out your Mazerati. It's one of the most beautiful sounding amps that Doc has ever made. My Mazerati is one of my favorite sounding Zs, and I have 6!

Less glassy: 1) Turn your tone pot down a hair on the guitar. 2) Try different speakers. The V30 is probably accentuating the glass that you don't want. Celestion's least neutral speaker.

I agree with Billy. V30's are really bright and bitey. I have a Mazerati head and play through two Weber Silver Bells (60 watts total). If you want more gain and midrange and less treble, just search for the right speak. This should be easy since you have a single twelve.
I'd recommend Weber speakers, the'ye American made and they stand behind their work. I'd start looking for a 30 watt AlNiCo British type model (Blue Dogs (or whatever they call them)). For the most mids, get their G12H30 copy. You could also email them with your symptoms and tell them what kind of tone you want, Ted Weber himself often responds the same day.
Changing the speaker would be the easiest and best way to change your tone. Good luckand let us know what you go with.

Also, a 5V4 rec tube is an option to slightly cut volume and let you crank/work the output tubes harder for more output gain. I do not like a V30 /Rati.

I found the Mazerati very un-trickable. I tried different preamp configs, different power tubes and rectifiers. Could not get away from the Mazerati sound of the amp. It is a fantastic amp but has unique characteristics that cannot be covered up, even by pedals unless you are playing at bedroom levels where the power sections is not doing anything yet.

I'm another fan of replacing the V30. Didn't like it at all in this amp.

A beamblocker helped me in my 112 combo. Inexpensive trick under 20 bucks. Paul

I just bought a Maz with a v30 and also found the speaker not acceptable. But if you are looking to get rid of top end I can't imagine a speaker change helping all that much. I personally thought the v30 was way too floppy with a weird scooped mid. I just bought a gold celestion that has more mids but a glassier top. What if you just cranked the tone nob and added a lot of bottom?

I can't imagine a speaker change helping all that much. You'd be amazed.

What I meant was that I think the v30 doesn't have much top end. I think they are rather dark sounding which I don't like. Therefore if you replace it I can't imagine getting anything with less top end. Especially if you already have a beam blocker.

speakers make or break this amp . Im using several speakers in my Mazerati ,Swamp Thang, Tonkers and a Weber blue dog 50 watt . most Celestions are way to bright and compress way to fast for my playing style. I spank the plank pretty hard.

I love Weber's. I'd do a 30 watt Blue Dog AlNiCo if you're looking for natural blooming breakup or their G12H30 Ceramic for a tight warm growl. If you don't wanna break up so soon, get a 50 watt speaker.
